About us

UCL History department, which dates back to 1830, is one of the best in the world for historical research and teaching. We are committed to small group teaching (alongside, where appropriate, larger group lectures). There are 770 undergraduate and 107 masters and around 50 research (PhD) students in the Department. Like UCL as a whole, we are a highly diverse and international community of students and academics. Most undergraduate students take a BA in History, and we also offer Ancient History and History with a Year Abroad. Our taught masters degrees are MA in History, MA in Ancient History, MA in Medieval and Renaissance Studies, MA in the History of Political Thought and Intellectual History, and MA in Public History, the latter based at the UCL East campus.

UCL History routinely receives very high ratings in university rankings and in Research Excellence Framework exercises.

About the role

The Scholarship

The Tassi Graduate Scholarship, established by a generous private donation, offers full funding (including home fees) for three years of PhD research in the field of ancient Greek history. The proposed research may concern any subject within the range of supervisory expertise on ancient Greece available within the History Department, as offered by Julietta Steinhauer (Associate Professor in Hellenistic History; see ) and Paola Ceccarelli (Professor of Greek History: see )

For further details about postgraduate research in the History Department at UCL see

PhD Supervision

The successful candidate will be supervised by one or both of the academics listed above. Joint or secondary supervision by academics from the wider History Department or from another Department is possible provided that the supervisory expertise is thematically or methodologically relevant to the research project. Potential applicants are advised to look at the History Department's staff pages and consider possible supervisors beyond their primary supervisor. The final supervisory arrangement will be confirmed at the start of the degree.

The student will participate in the Research Training programme in the department.
