Role Summary

We are seeking experienced Freelance Study Skills Tutors specialising in Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD) and Autism Spectrum (AS) to join our growing online team.

WE ARE CURRENTLY LOOKING FOR AUTISM SPECTRUM STUDY SKILLS TUTORS ONLY APPLY IF YOU HAVE RELEVANT QUALIFICATIONS.

You will work one-to-one with DSA-funded students, helping them build academic confidence, self-advocacy, and independent learning strategies. The role is entirely remote and flexible, ideal for professionals who want to make a real impact through inclusive education.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver tailored, one-to-one study skills support to students with SpLDs and/or autism.
  • Support learners in areas such as time management, academic writing, revision strategies, and use of assistive technology.
  • Conduct initial assessments and set achievable learning goals with students.
  • Maintain accurate records of sessions, progress, and agreed outcomes.
  • Collaborate with assessors, NMH providers, and other stakeholders as needed.
  • Stay up to date with developments in inclusive teaching and assistive technologies.

Essential Criteria

Educational Qualifications

  • SpLD qualification: A recognised qualification in Specific Learning Differences (SpLD) is essential. Examples include:
  • Level 5 Certificate – e.g. BDA Level 5 Certificate in Dyslexia: Literacy, Support, suitable for those without a teaching qualification.
  • Level 7 Diploma – a postgraduate-level route (e.g. from Dyslexia Action or equivalent) enabling work as an SpLD Practitioner.
  • Comprehensive training in adult autism
  • Other relevant postgraduate certificates or diplomas in SpLD from recognised training providers.
  • Professional membership: Membership with professional bodies such as PATOSS, BDA, or ADSHE is required to ensure adherence to professional standards.
  • Annual CPD certification (10h)

Experience and Skills

  • Demonstrable experience providing study skills or specialist tutoring to students with SpLDs and/or autism.
  • Knowledge of the Disabled Students' Allowance (DSA) framework and Higher Education support environment.
  • Strong understanding of inclusive learning strategies and assistive technologies.
  • Excellent communication, empathy, and interpersonal skills.
  • Confident working remotely with students via online platforms (e.g. Teams, Zoom).
  • Strong record-keeping, time-management, and self-organisation skills.
  • Eligible to work in the UK on a freelance basis.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience in Higher Education or supporting university-level learners.
  • Background in inclusive teaching, neurodiversity advocacy, or mental-health-aware learning support.
  • Familiarity with common assistive technology tools (e.g. TextHelp, Glean, MindView, Grammarly).

Hours & Contract

  • Freelance engagement (you are responsible for your own tax and NI).
  • Pay rate: £32 – £35 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience.
  • Flexible, remote working — sessions arranged around tutor and student availability.
  • Rolling student caseload with potential for regular ongoing work.
