About Us

This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic Charity and Housing Association. The Society of St James (SSJ) has been working in Hampshire for over 50 years, delivering high impact, person-centred, accommodation services to adults and young people experiencing homelessness, problematic substance use and mental health problems. We believe that every person is of worth and we are prepared to take risks to house and support the most at risk and socially excluded members of society.

The Role

Are you passionate about supporting vulnerable people and ensuring they have a safe, secure place to call home?

We are looking for a dedicated and empathetic Welfare Officer to join a vital team managing a temporary housing provision in partnership with Rushmoor Borough Council.

The Impact You'll Make

As a Welfare Officer, you will be on the front lines, providing high-quality support and ensuring the smooth, compassionate running of our provision. Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Welcoming New Residents: Conducting thorough and friendly sign-ups, helping residents transition smoothly into their new accommodation.
  • Safety & Compliance: Carrying out regular inspections to ensure a secure environment for all.
  • Empowering Support: Acting as a crucial signposting link, connecting residents with vital external support services (e.g., mental health, debt advice, employment) to help them thrive.
  • Expert Record Keeping: Maintaining meticulous and accurate records and case notes to ensure effective case management.

Who We're Looking For

You'll bring a balanced and innovative approach to complex situations.

  • Housing Expertise: You have demonstrable experience working within an accommodation or housing setting, specifically carrying out sign-ups and case note management.
  • Person-Centred Focus: You possess a genuinely person-centred and innovative approach to working with residents, always focusing on their individual needs and dignity.
  • Thoughtful Risk Manager: You approach risk with a thoughtful and balanced perspective, capable of identifying safeguarding concerns while maintaining a supportive relationship with residents.
  • Proactive and Organised: You are diligent in carrying out inspections and maintaining the essential administrative functions that keep the provision running effectively.

Staff Benefits

We value and recognise our staff, offering some generous benefits, as well as the satisfaction of helping people at risk:

  • A competitive annual leave entitlement of 25 days rising to 30 days, plus public holidays
  • Flexible working options
  • Buying additional annual leave
  • Comprehensive induction and training
  • Counselling, financial, personal support and health and wellbeing services via our Employee Assistance Programme
  • Company cycle to work scheme
  • Discounted laptops and computers with Jamie's Computers
