Plant Manager – Hydrogen Production Facility

Birmingham | Full-time | On-site

About the role

You'll take full responsibility for day-to-day operations at one of Europe's green hydrogen refueling and production plants. The site runs 24/7 and produces renewable hydrogen for transport and industrial use.

You'll lead a small team of shift operatives and technicians, ensuring the plant operates safely, efficiently, and in line with regulatory and environmental standards. You'll be the link between site operations, engineering support, and senior management.

Key responsibilities

  • Oversee daily operation of the hydrogen production and refueling plant, ensuring uptime, safety, and performance targets are met
  • Supervise and coordinate the shift team, assigning tasks and monitoring work quality
  • Plan and manage preventive and corrective maintenance activities using the CMMS system
  • Review plant performance data, identify issues, and implement improvements
  • Manage external contractors and service providers during maintenance or upgrade work
  • Maintain site documentation, permits, and compliance with HSE and ATEX standards
  • Lead incident response, risk assessments, and site safety audits
  • Report operational KPIs, maintenance progress, and plant availability to management
  • Support commissioning and future plant upgrades across Hygen's growing network

What you'll need

  • Strong background in process, chemical, or industrial gas plant operations
  • Experience supervising operators or maintenance teams in a live production environment
  • Good understanding of hydrogen, compressed gases, or pressure systems (preferred)
  • Working knowledge of P&IDs, control systems, and maintenance planning
  • Recognised engineering qualification (HNC/HND/NVQ L4+)
  • Strong safety awareness and ability to lead by example on site
  • Flexibility to support a 24/7 operation with occasional on-call duties
