Greater Bristol Area, United Kingdom APEM Ltd Full time £45,000 - £60,000 per year

Are you an experienced aquatic scientist looking for role that gets you out in to the aquatic environment? Do you have a passion for understanding and improving water quality in estuarine, coastal, and marine environments? Are you keen to lead impactful fieldwork and technical studies that inform sustainable water management?

We're looking for a Senior Water Quality Survey Scientist to join our growing team in the South of England (ideally within 90 minutes of Bristol). You'll work on a wide variety of estuarine and marine water quality monitoring projects, leading field programmes, data collection and analysis, and supporting project delivery for clients across the environmental and water sectors.

You'll play a key part in designing and implementing monitoring programmes, operating and maintaining specialist field and marine equipment, and ensuring high standards of health, safety, and data quality. The role also involves contributing to project management, mentoring junior staff, and engaging with clients and regulators to deliver high-quality, evidence-based outcomes.

To be successful in this role, you'll need:

  • A relevant degree (e.g. Environmental Science, Marine Science, or related discipline) and professional experience in water quality, estuarine, or marine monitoring.
  • Proven experience conducting and managing field surveys, including boat-based work.
  • Confidence operating and maintaining environmental and telemetry monitoring equipment.
  • Strong data handling, analysis, and interpretation skills.
  • Excellent communication and report writing skills, with the ability to manage your time effectively and deliver to tight deadlines.
  • A full UK driving licence and willingness to travel as projects require.

It's a bonus if you have:

  • Marine safety qualifications such as STCW-95, ENG1, or RYA Level 2 Powerboat Handling.
  • Experience managing or mentoring junior colleagues.
  • Familiarity with water quality modelling or hydrometric monitoring.
  • Membership of a relevant professional body.

At APEM, you'll join a collaborative and supportive team dedicated to protecting and enhancing aquatic environments. You'll have the opportunity to work on projects of national importance, supported by leading scientists and cutting-edge technology. Whether your interests lie in hands-on marine fieldwork, data interpretation, or project leadership, this role offers a unique opportunity to grow your career within one of the UK's most respected environmental consultancies.
