About Us

The Financial Ombudsman Service is an independent, not-for-profit organisation that plays a vital role in UK financial services. Every day we help resolve disputes between consumers, or small businesses, and their financial service providers. At the Financial Ombudsman Service, we make decisions on a range of complex and difficult issues. Every year we resolve hundreds of thousands of disputes between consumers or small businesses and their financial service providers – and if we believe a customer hasn't been treated fairly, we can step in to put things right.

The purpose of the role

As a Governance and Oversight Specialist, you will play a pivotal role in supporting the Head of Governance and Oversight to drive strategic governance, performance and target setting assurance, and operational insight across the Operational Planning and Performance function.

You will contribute to the design, implementation, and continuous improvement and adherence of governance frameworks, performance reporting, target setting, casework tools and decision-making structures that underpin service excellence and operational resilience. Your work will directly inform senior leadership, enabling data-driven decisions and fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.

What You'll Do

As Governance and Oversight Specialist, you will coordinate the work of others, within the team, to ensure that continuous governance and oversight initiatives are clearly scoped, costed, planned and executed.

This role requires a strong analytical mindset, the ability to distil complex data into actionable insights, and a proactive approach to identifying opportunities for enhanced oversight. You will be responsible for producing high-quality reports and briefings for senior stakeholders, ensuring governance processes are robust, transparent, and consistently applied across the function.

Key responsibilities

  • Supporting the Head of Governance and Oversight in delivering governance and oversight activities across Operational Planning and Performance.

  • Preparing and maintaining documentation such as RACIs, process maps, and oversight frameworks.

  • Conducting data analysis to support decision-making and performance monitoring.

  • Assisting in the development and implementation of performance-based incentive schemes.

  • Supporting the governance of individual target setting frameworks and undertaking checks on performance targets.

  • Supporting the governance and oversight of casework tools.

  • Collaborating with Quality Advisers to drive continuous improvement in quality processes.

  • Contributing to reporting for ExCo and Board subcommittees on planning and performance risks and governance initiatives.

  • Building effective relationships across operational teams in order to influence stakeholders by understanding and addressing their needs, using a range of relevant approaches.

  • Have the ability to lead others with minimal support, providing direction and guidance while reviewing work at agreed milestones.

  • Use discretion in identifying and responding to complex issues, applying sound judgement and insight.

To be considered for this role, you'll need to show us that you've got the skills and capabilities. You'll have to meet the following minimum criteria:

Minimum Criteria

  • Previous experience in a role involving data analysis, reporting, or governance including employing data, insight and digital skills to drive solutions and decision making.

  • Experience in designing, implementing, and continuously improving governance frameworks and performance management processes.

  • Ability to influence stakeholders by understanding and addressing their needs and building effective relationships across operational teams.

  • Proven capability to deputise for the Head of Governance and Oversight, including representing the function in senior forums, making decisions within delegated authority, and ensuring continuity of leadership and oversight.

  • Experience and capability to coach and mentor others, supporting their development and fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.

  • Proficiency in using data tools (e.g., Excel, Power BI, or similar).

It would also be nice if you have the following experience
