About us

The Chair of Political Economy at UCL was created in 1827 in memory of David Ricardo, thus establishing the first Department of Economics in England. The department of Economics has an outstanding international reputation in key areas of current research. It is the only department of economics in the UK to have received the outstanding grade-point average of 3.78 (out of 4) in the 2014 REF with 79% of all indicators of output rated at the highest 4* level. According to the grade point average (GPA) on the overall score, the REF 2014 has ranked the Department of Economics at UCL as:
• the top Department in the UK in the field of Economics and Econometrics
• the top Department at UCL, and
• the top Department in any field in any university in the UK This is an extraordinarily positive outcome which documents the Department's outstanding quality in Research. It is the fruit of many years hard work aimed at producing a world leading Department excelling in producing frontier-shifting and policy relevant research The department offers a number of undergraduate degree programmes, a vigorous undergraduate affiliate student programme, Masters programmes in Economics and Finance and a structured MPhil/PhD programme. The Department of Economics at UCL is a medium-sized department by UK standards with a regular academic staff of 50, but it is supplemented with full-time research staff and part-time teaching fellows plus an active programme of academic visitors. About the role

We wish to appoint Lecturers in Economics to contribute to teaching and administration on the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes within the Department. The Lecturers will be expected to teach at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level – either supporting existing modules within the department and/or by developing new options. We welcome applications from high-quality candidates with research and teaching interests in areas consistent with the profile across the Department. The successful candidate will be expected to undertake research of the highest international standards within his or her own specialist field, which will contribute to the research standing and culture of the department.

About you

Specific teaching and administrative duties may include but are not limited to:
• A contribution to core teaching of undergraduate courses relevant to the individuals specialisms;
• Delivering additional courses either from existing courses and/or by offering new options on the department's undergraduate and Masters programmes;
• Holding regular student 'office hours';
• Supervision of undergraduate and Masters student dissertations;
• Personal tutor responsibilities;
• Supervision of PhD students;
• Normal duties of teaching administration including preparation of examination papers and essay questions, first and second marking of essays, examination papers and dissertations, maintaining attendance records for courses taught; reporting problems to the Departmental Graduate Tutor/Head of Department (as appropriate);
• Maintaining quality assurance documentation for the courses taught;
• Contributing to the smooth running of the department, including through taking up administrative roles in support of teaching and research, and attending departmental and other meetings as designated.
