London, Greater London, United Kingdom Natcap Full time £60,000 - £100,000 per year

Location: Hybrid in office 3 days a week. Occasional national or international travel.

Natcap is on a mission to accelerate the nature-positive transition by integrating nature intelligence into business decision-making.

As regulatory and societal expectations extend beyond net zero, nature is increasingly recognised as the next frontier of sustainability. However, nature is a new and evolving field. Businesses are in need of expertise, and consultants lack access to the data and infrastructure to support them. Natcap works with both corporates and sustainability consultants to ensure they can respond to emerging requirements such as CSRD reporting on biodiversity and ecosystems, and TNFD voluntary reporting. In a short period, we have grown to serve major organisations in the UK, Europe, East Asia, South America, and Australia.

As a senior scientist, you will be joining our multidisciplinary science function to lead the development of models and metrics for our nature intelligence platform, and bring the most rigorous science to the hands of those with the biggest influence on nature. You will work in our consulting team, collaborating with delivery managers, software engineers and other scientists in cross-functional teams to deliver useful and scalable insights to customers, helping them understand their interaction with nature and ultimately take action.

What you'll do in this role

Innovate and develop new models and metrics that are informed by robust science and create clarity and insight for our customers across a range of sectors and geographies

Work within our Natcap infrastructure to ingest and process data, quickly design, prototype and test new models and metrics, and build new analyses and insights. You'll work almost exclusively in Python programming language.

Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams, including software engineers, product managers, delivery leads and scientists, and be responsible for the processing and timely delivery of customer results.

Join customer calls and work closely with our commercial and product teams to deeply understand customer context and priorities to ensure your science is useful and impactful

Speak with experts across a range of fields and topics to quickly master the state of science on a topic, and then translate this knowledge into models and metrics that can be deployed at scale

Communicate complex scientific concepts in a clear and compelling way to a range of audiences, including customers and non-experts.

Quality assure your own work, and the work of others, including through code review.

What we're looking for

Essential

Strong academic track record in a relevant field with a PhD or Masters

3+ years of experience in applied modelling, data science or spatial analysis in a closely related field

Fluency in Python, including geospatial packages

Excellent communicator, with a knack for distilling complex & technical topics for non-specialist audiences

Ability to work independently and lead on the design and implementation of projects and deliverables

Kind person who creates a supportive and inclusive team environment

Ability to manage multiple, varied tasks with enthusiasm and prioritise workload with an eye for detail and a high quality bar.

Passion about sustainability and the environment and having a positive impact on the nature and climate crises

Nice to have

Familiarity with cloud computing, github and software development

Experience working in cross-disciplinary teams

Experience in sustainability or related field
