School Caretaker (Split Shift) - Long Term Temp to Perm

Hours: Monday to Friday

Morning: 7:00am – 8:15am

Afternoon: 3:15pm – 6:00pm

Reports to: Site Manager / School Business Manager

Job Purpose:

To ensure the school premises are clean, safe, secure, and well-maintained at the start and end of the school day. You will play a key role in supporting the daily operations of the school by opening and closing the site, performing basic maintenance, and maintaining a safe environment for pupils, staff, and visitors.

Key Responsibilities:

Site Opening (Morning Shift):

  • Unlock all gates, doors, and buildings in time for the school day
  • Carry out a visual inspection of the premises to ensure safety and cleanliness
  • Check heating, lighting, and alarms are operational
  • Clear any external debris from entrances and walkways
  • Address any urgent issues or report them to the Site Manager

Site Closing (Afternoon Shift):

  • Ensure all pupils, staff, and visitors have vacated the premises
  • Lock doors, gates, windows, and set alarms
  • Perform light cleaning and tidying of communal areas if required
  • Carry out routine maintenance or minor repairs as instructed
  • Monitor stock levels of cleaning supplies and consumables and report when replenishment is needed
  • Liaise with external contractors if needed (under supervision of Site Manager)

Person Specification:

  • Previous caretaking, site assistant, or maintenance experience (preferred)
  • Reliable and punctual with a strong sense of responsibility
  • Ability to work independently and follow a schedule
  • Basic DIY/maintenance skills
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Awareness of health & safety and safeguarding responsibilities (training can be provided)

Additional Information:

  • Enhanced DBS check required
  • Some flexibility may be required for school events or holiday work

Pay: £14.00-£16.00 per hour
