As a Funeral Service Operative, you will play a vital role in supporting the funeral director and ensuring the smooth operation of funeral services. You will be responsible for various tasks, including the transportation of the deceased, preparation of the funeral home, and assisting with funeral ceremonies. This position requires sensitivity, professionalism, and a commitment to providing a compassionate service to grieving families. We are a small, independent family business and the successful applicant will be expected to demonstrate flexibility in working throughout the businesses' two premises at Amersham and Wendover. You must be prepared to have a DBS check and a full clean driving license is essential for this role. This is a full time salaried position, however you will earn additional payments from your on call duty, overtime etc. You will need to live within 30 minutes drive of our Amersham office (HP6 6AA) to cover on call duties which are a key part of this job role.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Transportation:
  • Safely transport the deceased from the place of death to the funeral home, and to the church, cemetery or crematorium.
  • Drive and maintain funeral vehicles, ensuring they are clean and presentable at all times
  • Assist in the preparation and presentation of the deceased, ensuring they are treated with dignity and respect.
  • Assist the funeral director during funeral services, including greeting and seating guests, carrying the coffin, and coordinating with officiants.
  • Handle any special requests from families with care and attention to detail.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation related to funeral services.
  • Assist with administrative duties as needed, such as managing schedules and responding to inquiries.

Maintenance:

  • Ensure that the funeral home and facilities are clean, well-maintained, and organised.
  • Conduct routine checks and minor maintenance on funeral equipment and vehicles.

Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in a funeral service role or similar position is preferred but not essential as training will be given.
  • Experience in customer service or hospitality is beneficial.

Hours:

  • Flexible working hours, including evenings and weekends, as required by the needs of the funeral service.
  • Work involves both indoor and outdoor settings, with exposure to various weather conditions.
  • Office duties including answering the phone, taking messages and assisting with chapel visits. Occasional office cover may be required so basic computer literacy is advantageous.
