This is a senior hands-on role, combining technical depth with leadership. You'll be responsible for guiding complex client projects, setting the standard for engineering excellence, and helping to grow and manage our internal software engineering capability. You'll shape how we deliver, mentor engineers at all levels, and work directly with clients to solve their toughest problems.

Based out of any of our UK offices, this is a permanent role within our Software Engineering Function. At Credera, we operate a flexible hybrid working model. This requires 3 days per week working onsite - either at client site (as required) or in your local Credera office (London, Manchester, Leeds or Newcastle). We value collaboration and client impact, so our hybrid model is designed to strike a balance between flexibility, in-person connection, and delivering exceptional outcomes for our clients. Here's what you will do

As a Principal Engineer, you'll take the lead on some of our most complex and challenging client projects, often acting as the most senior engineer or technical lead in the room. You'll be responsible for ensuring delivery is not only successful but also sets the standard for engineering excellence. This means shaping the way teams build software, embedding modern practices such as CI/CD, cloud-native design, test automation, DevOps, and AI-assisted development, and ensuring these are consistently applied across our work.

Your role will also extend beyond client delivery. You'll play a key part in shaping and growing Credera's software engineering capability - helping to set frameworks and standards, contributing to recruitment, and building a culture of collaboration and innovation. You'll act as a mentor and manager for engineers at all levels, investing in their development, offering technical guidance, and helping them thrive in their careers.

Equally, you'll work closely with clients and stakeholders, building trusted relationships based on technical credibility, clear communication, and pragmatic problem-solving. You'll contribute to business development by advising on proposals, shaping engineering solutions, and bringing your expertise to the design of end-to-end systems. Importantly, you'll stay hands-on with technology - coding, prototyping, and experimenting with emerging tools - so that you remain a credible leader who inspires others through both your knowledge and your practice.

As a Principal Engineer, you will:

• Lead engineering delivery on complex client projects, often taking the role of senior engineer or technical lead.

• Set standards for modern engineering practices (CI/CD, cloud-native, testing, DevOps, security, AI-assisted development) and ensure these are consistently applied.

• Provide technical direction and guidance to teams, balancing pragmatism with long-term quality.

• Act as a mentor and line manager for engineers, investing in their development and helping them reach their potential.

• Support the growth of Credera's engineering capability by shaping frameworks, contributing to recruitment, and building a strong engineering culture.

• Partner with consulting and architecture colleagues to design and deliver end-to-end solutions for clients.

• Work directly with clients and stakeholders, building trusted relationships through technical credibility, clear communication, and collaborative problem-solving.

• Contribute to business development by advising on proposals, shaping solutions, and bringing engineering expertise to the table.

• Stay hands-on, maintaining credibility through coding, prototyping, and experimenting with new technologies.

• Promote Credera's engineering practice externally through talks, articles, and industry engagement.

We're looking for someone who is:

• An experienced engineering leader with a proven record of building and guiding high-performing teams.

• Deeply skilled in at least one modern technology stack (e.g., Java, Python, , .NET) with the versatility to work across others.

• Strong in API and data engineering, with experience designing scalable, reliable, and secure systems.

• Fluent in modern engineering practices: agile delivery, CI/CD, DevOps, test automation, and cloud-native development.

• Comfortable working across major cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP).

• Able to balance hands-on coding with providing technical leadership and oversight.

• A strong communicator who can work effectively with both engineers and senior business stakeholders.

• Passionate about mentoring, coaching, and developing engineering talent.

• Curious, pragmatic, and proactive in adopting emerging technologies - including the use of AI-powered tools in engineering.
