Associate Professorship of Anthropology and Development (Grade 36S: £58,265 - £77,645 p.a.)

Oxford Department of International Development in association with Linacre College

Start date: 1st September 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The Oxford Department of International Development (ODID) and Linacre College seek applications for an Associate Professor of Anthropology and Development. The appointment is for a permanent and full-time post, subject to successful completion of the initial period of office.

The successful candidate should have a doctorate in social anthropology or a cognate discipline clearly grounded in the discipline of anthropology, with a bearing on development studies. They will also have an outstanding research and publication record, commensurate with stage of academic career. University teaching experience in anthropology and in areas related to development at the postgraduate level, including thesis supervision; and proven ability to present research findings effectively to fellow academics, policy-makers, practitioners and other informed members of the public are essential for this role. A strong preference will be given to expertise in the regions of Latin America and/or the Middle East.

The appointee will be required to engage in research and to contribute to the Department's and University's reputation for research excellence by publishing research findings in books, book chapters and articles in prestigious, peer-reviewed journals, as appropriate. They will also be expected to develop courses, provide teaching and supervision to graduate students on taught courses, and to cooperate in curriculum development, in particular in the MPhil in Development Studies.

In addition to the duties associated with the University side of the post, the successful candidate will become a member of the Governing Body of Linacre College and will be expected to attend its meetings. They may also be asked to serve on its Trustee Board. Furthermore, as a Fellow of the College, they will be expected to sit on its committees and may be asked from time to time to serve as an Officer of the College, should such a request be made by the Fellowships and Appointments Committee.
