About the BDA

The BDA is the voice of dentists and dental students in the UK. We are the trade union, professional association and scientific society for dentists. Our work brings dentists together to represent their interests to Government and the NHS and to campaign for policy changes as well as providing support to our members through advice and education.

About the role

The successful applicant will provide professional administrative and secretarial support to the work of the BDAs Policy and Research Team. It will be the committee secretary to a number of the Associations policy-making committees representing various sectors of dentistry, ensuring that they operate effectively and efficiently. They will provide administrative support to committees across all areas of the Teams work and will ensure that the Teams committee administration and governance working practices reflect the BDAs needs and best practice.

This is a full-time permanent position. We anticipate a hybrid approach to working location, with home working alongside attendance at our central London office as and when required.

About you

Youll have excellent organisational and administrative skills, with a detailed-oriented and diligent approach to your work. Youll be adept at managing a complex workload and competing deadlines, and will be able to plan work effectively, prioritising tasks and anticipating upcoming needs of your team and committees.

Experience of having previously acted as a committee secretary, or in another secretarial role, would make you well suited to the post but is by no means essential.

Youll have a strong writing ability, being able to confidently produce complex and technical minutes and reports, which will be an essential part of your role

Youll be an effective and confident communicator, with interpersonal skills that allow you to work with people in various positions with differing levels of seniority. Youll be a team player who is dedicated to supporting the work of colleagues, while also having the ability to work independently and manage your own workload.

Youll understand what the role and purpose of trade unions and professional associations is, and you may have an interest in the health policy that the committees you support have a key role in forming.

About the team

You will be joining a team of policy and research professionals who are motivated by making a difference for the BDAs members and the patients they care for. We pride ourselves on our extensive collective knowledge of dentistry and the high-quality secretarial support we provide to our policy making committees. We strive to improve the working lives of dentists and support efforts to improve the oral health of the nation. We gather evidence and knowledge from our elected committees, and conduct research and policy analysis, to influence, persuade and negotiate on pay, contracts, terms and conditions, and other policies that impact dentists and their patients. We drive change through direct engagement with decision and policy-makers, such as the Government and the NHS, as well as through cross-team working to influence wider stakeholders, politicians and the public.
