Are you passionate about philosophy and teaching? Birkbeck, University of London, is looking to recruit a part-time, fixed-term Associate Lecturer to teach next year in 2026.
Joining the School of Historical Studies, as Associate Lecturer, you would teach on the following modules:
- Morality, Society and Politics
- 30 hours, either 2-5pm or 6-9pm (tbc)
Tuesdays 13 January to 24 March 2026.
The Ethics of Life and Death: Humans, Animals and the Environment
- 15 hours, 6-9pm (weeks 1-5)
- Wednesdays between 14 January and 11 February 2026.
You will have in-depth knowledge of the discipline of Philosophy, specific to Moral and Political Philosophy, and experience of both research and teaching within the higher education context in this field.
You should also have a PhD (or equivalent level) in an appropriate specialism, or to be close to completion.
Further to the person specification, essential requirements for these roles are:
- A PhD (or equivalent level) in an appropriate specialism or to be close to completion.
- A good developing track record of research in the field.
- Teaching experience at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.
- A good understanding of different teaching and learning methods, and experience in working with students from a range of backgrounds.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Good organisation and administration skills.

Remuneration:
Payment is based on an hourly rate depending on length of continuous service with the College (starting rate £69.68 per hour inclusive of pro-rata London Allowance and holiday pay) for contact hours worked.
This hourly rate is based on the starting point of Grade 7 and is inclusive of a 'Duties Related to Teaching Multiplier' at 2.5, which covers preparation, teaching, administration, assessment marking and other examining duties in connection with the course.
Contract:
