Principal Designer – London

Central London | 4+ days per week in office

Up to £100,000 DOE

I'm supporting a leading global property & construction consultancy with the hire of two Principal Designers to join their growing London team.

This role sits firmly on the design side of the PD function — ideal for someone who comes from an architectural / design background and wants to work closely with clients and design teams to drive design quality, coordination and proportionate design risk management.

If you're a design-literate PD who enjoys influencing early-stage decision-making (not just traditional H&S auditing), this will be a strong match.

The Opportunity

As a Principal Designer, you'll be the client-facing lead for PD services across a portfolio of complex London projects. You'll shape design risk strategy from concept through delivery, acting as the bridge between architects, engineers, PMs and cost managers to ensure a coordinated and safe design process.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the primary client-facing representative for the Principal Designer service, providing clear, design-led CDM advice across all RIBA stages.
  • Manage and develop design risk documentation: PCI, design risk registers and inputs for the Health & Safety File.
  • Lead the design risk management process across multiple projects, ensuring designers meet CDM duties without compromising design intent.
  • Review architectural/technical information to identify design risks early and propose practical, proportionate solutions.
  • Facilitate design coordination meetings and workshops with architects, engineers, PMs and cost managers.
  • Mentor junior PDs and support the ongoing development of best practice within the PD function.

Requirements

  • Recognised architectural or design qualification.
  • APS membership.
  • IOSH membership.
  • Strong design literacy — confident interpreting drawings and challenging technical information.
  • Proven Principal Designer experience within a consultancy or client-side environment.
  • Strong communicator with excellent client-facing skills.
  • Collaborative and comfortable operating in a multidisciplinary consultancy setting.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: £80,000.00-£100,000.00 per year
