About us

The UCL Electronic and Electrical Engineering invites applications for one (1) postdoctoral research position in 6G wireless communications technologies.

The successful candidates will work on the EPSRC project, Fluid antenna systems for 6G wireless communications: Implementation, system optimisation and theoretical analysis. This project benefits from research collaboration with BT, Toshiba Research Laboratory (Europe) and VIAVI Solutions.

This project builds upon the pioneering effort of the investigators on fluid antenna systems - an entirely new antenna concept that permits extraordinary reconfigurability that can be translated into enormous capacity and reliability gains for mobile communication systems and aims to tackle the fundamental challenges in terms of implementation, design and optimisation and performance analysis for unleashing the great potential of fluid antennas for 6G mobile communications.

About the role

We are looking for a talented postdoctoral researcher to join our team and help us fulfil the project's goals, producing quality research.

The work will assist in integrating FAS into the current and upcoming standards. The successful candidate will work within an established research team led by Prof. Kai-Kit Wong. This will involve new fundamental transceiver design and analysis by developing optimisation algorithms in the context of fluid antenna communications systems. The successful candidate will work closely with a team of experts in UCL, BT, Toshiba Research Laboratory and VIAVI Solutions.

The post is available from as soon as possible for 12 months in the first instance. Further funding to support the post may be available.

About you

Candidates should have a PhD degree (or about to submit) in a relevant subject area, or similar experience demonstrated via publications in international journals/conferences or patents. The researcher should have strong background in channel coding for Fluid Antenna Systems (FAS) and experience in standardisation activities. A strong background in wireless communication theory and coding design is also essential. They should have knowledge in the 5G NR standards and coding schemes in 5G.

Evidence of participation in funded R&D projects in the UK or overseas in some of the areas of: Wireless communications, MIMO, RIS, optimisation, machine learning and game theoretic methods is desirable.

If the successful candidate has not yet been awarded their PhD, appointment will be made as a Research Assistant (Grade 6B). Payment at Grade 7 will be backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis including corrections, once the PhD has been awarded. The salary scale for Research Assistant (Grade 6B), point Salary range £39,148 - £41,833 (inc. London Allowance of £5,197 pa).
