About The Role
The Telegraph is seeking an experienced and ambitious reporter to take the Consumer Affairs Correspondent role in a new direction.
This is a key specialism within the Money team, with the opportunity to set the news agenda with original and investigative consumer journalism.
You will report to the Consumer Affairs Editor and are expected to source exclusives, build campaigns and work on investigations. The ideal candidate will be full of ideas, energy and determination, and able to think of fresh ways to take on key topics of interest that speak to the Telegraph audience.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide high quality, accurate coverage of the patch and generate exclusive, agenda-setting stories
- Work closely with the Consumer Affairs Editor to identify trends, stories, campaigns and investigations that affect Telegraph readers
- The successful candidate for this role will progress to writing front page stories and articles that lead the website
- Write accurate, clear and engaging stories that are accurate and legally compliant.
- Meet tight deadlines and organise their schedule around the deadline demands of the newsroom.
- Under pressure, identify the best line for a potential story and relay that information to editors clearly and concisely.
- Build and maintain a strong network of relevant contacts
- Play an integral role in what is a stable, happy and ambitious team
Key Skills
- Proven experience of reporting within a national newsroom or equivalent
- Finely tuned journalistic instincts that mean you can spot a story and know how to craft compelling stories
- Experience of planning and producing agenda-setting content
- An ability to write clear, accurate copy as well as numerate
- A proven ability to develop sources and contacts
- Highly organised and able to work on multiple projects simultaneously while effectively prioritising different tasks
- A strong verbal communicator, who is able to explain stories succinctly and clearly to editors
- News-aware and alive to the interests of our audience
- Full of original ideas, energetic and enthusiastic
Desirable skills
- Knowledgeable about key personal finance topics and experience of consumer journalism
- Experienced in digital publishing
- Comfortable with the use of analytics
