Job Title

Engineering Manager

Job Description

We're hiring an Engineering Manager at Underwrite Me to lead two Product teams (~6 engineers in each team) to deliver new features and own their software in production.

You'll manage both people and delivery, driving customer outcomes and business value. Your teams work with technologies like Spring, Java, React, Kubernetes, Docker, Terraform, Helm and AWS. Reporting into the Director of Engineering you'll be part of their technical leadership team.

As Engineering Manager you'll shape the future of the platform as we evolve into a modern enterprise SaaS. You'll lead software delivery, grow people and help build scalable, maintainable systems that deliver real user value. Your work spans the full SDLC, and you'll be empowered to take ownership of complex engineering challenges.

If you're curious, full of ideas and motivated by delivering strategic impact, we'd love to hear from you. While this is the culture we're striving for, we're not fully there yet. We're looking for people who will help up-skill our teams and shape the culture we want to build.

What you will be Doing

  • Manage people and delivery for 2 teams of ~6 Engineers

  • Raise the bar for team performance through individual performance management, hiring and goal setting

  • Partner with Product Managers and Designers to ensure the roadmap balances new features, technical improvements and a drive to become a modern enterprise Saas

  • Drive delivery by continuously improving how the team plans, delivers and maintains their Product

  • Provide technical leadership by guiding the team to design systems that meet Product and operational requirements

  • Collaborate with business stakeholders to help the team meet the needs of the customers

  • Participate in Engineering-wide leadership initiatives that progress the department towards the goals of the Engineering strategy

What type of person fits the role

  • You put the customer at the centre of every decision. Whether prioritising work, resolving trade-offs, or asking "why?", you anchor the conversation in how it impacts the people using our product.

  • You seek out feedback from your team, peers, and stakeholders, and act on it thoughtfully. You admit when you're wrong, learn from mistakes, and create an environment where others feel safe to do the same.

  • You take responsibility for the outcomes your team delivers. You encourage a culture where the team owns problems end-to-end and follows through on their delivery and reliability commitments.

  • You use data to inform decisions, measure impact and guide prioritisation. You help your team build a habit of using metrics to understand performance and identify areas for improvement.

  • You work in partnership with Product Managers, Designers and Engineering Leaders from other teams and build trusting relationships with stakeholders that help your team and our customers achieve their goals.

  • You know when to prioritise tactical and strategic work with your team. You're comfortable making trade-offs to meet delivery goals without compromising core quality standards and always have a plan to pay back technical debt.

  • You're curious, proactive and always looking for ways to grow, whether that's your own skills, your team's effectiveness or the systems your team
    build.

Technical Requirements

  • Managed a team of Software Engineers to deliver successful Products that drive customer outcomes and business value.

  • Prior experience as a Senior Software Engineer working on distributed systems in a Backend or Full-Stack context.

  • Raised the bar for team performance through individual performance management, hiring and goal setting.

  • Created a culture of ownership that ensures teams can balance delivering their Product Roadmap commitments as well as supporting the customers using their Product.

  • Cultivated trust from peers, stakeholders and stakeholders through clear, proactive communication grounded in actionable data.
