The Opportunity

Young Epilepsy exists to improve the lives and futures of children and young people with epilepsy. Through pioneering research, advocacy and support, they aim to create a world where every young person with epilepsy can thrive.

They are now seeking a
Head of Research
to lead their ambitious research and evaluation programme, shaping the charity's position as a global authority in childhood epilepsy.

The Role

Reporting to the CEO and working closely with The Prince of Wales's Chair of Childhood Epilepsy and Young Epilepsy Directors, the Head of Research will bring deep expertise in research leadership to shape and deliver the organisation's research agenda.

The postholder will oversee clinical, psychosocial and impact-led research projects, build academic and NHS partnerships, and ensure that the voices of young people and families are central to all research activity.

Main Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver Young Epilepsy's research strategy, aligned with organisational goals.
  • Oversee multiple research projects and ensuring quality assurance processes are in place, including governance, ethics, quality assurance, impact evaluation and reporting.
  • Lead and manage a multidisciplinary research team, fostering a culture of excellence and collaboration.
  • Establish and grow the Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) network to embed lived experience in research design.
  • Build and maintain partnerships with NHS Trusts, academic institutions, funders and research bodies.
  • Set and mange the Research Budget with the finance team, and work closely with the fundraising team to help secure funding through grant applications and commissioned research opportunities.
  • Represent Young Epilepsy at external forums, conferences and within wider research networks.

Key Skills & Experience

  • Proven experience managing research portfolios in health, clinical or related fields.
  • Strong understanding of research governance, ethics, impact evaluation and funding processes.
  • Experience of working with clinical, charity or academic partners (experience in paediatric or neurological research advantageous).
  • Excellent leadership, stakeholder engagement and project management skills.
  • Ability to communicate complex research insights to a range of audiences, including lay and clinical stakeholders.
  • A higher degree in a scientific, health or research discipline (Master's required; PhD desirable).
