Job Description
Your Role: Digital Managing Editor, Smooth
As a
Digital Managing Editor, Smooth
at Global, you will be overseeing the day-to-day operations of our digital content team on Smooth. You'll apply strong planning and prioritisation skills to ensure the team delivers to the highest standard while staying focused on key business objectives in a fast-paced environment. You'll play a leading role in developing our content output on Global Player, our website and all digital platforms to complement, enhance and amplify the radio product.

Key Responsibilities

  • To lead the social output for Smooth and its sister stations, including creating and posting social content
  • Leading the Smooth digital team with full accountability for the team's performance, leading by example and ensuring key responsibilities are met.
  • Hit and exceed monthly targets (unique users, Global Player users, video views, and overall reach) to maximise revenue opportunities. You'll use your adaptability and prioritisation skills to continuously evolve our approach and keep ahead of digital trends.
  • Day to day operational management of the editorial plan for Smooth on Global Player and its website and social platforms, ensuring a regular content pipeline to capture social media and SEO traffic and extend these audiences.
  • Ensure that Smooth's Global Player content and its website comply with editorial guidelines on quality, style, usability, navigation, content architecture and is optimised for search engines.
  • Work with on-air and digital teams to deliver content that is topical, timely, enjoyable and engaging on Global Player, the website and all relevant social platforms. You'll communicate clearly and confidently, adapting your approach to suit various audiences across the business.
  • Uphold editorial, social and design standards, ensuring tone is consistent across all platforms. You'll lead by coaching and developing your team, helping each individual unlock their full potential while upholding the highest content standards.
  • Perform regular competitor analysis to ensure Smooth remains a market leader in the latest digital best practices and trends, as part of the wider social first strategy.
  • Feed the editorial plan into the wider on-air editorial team, as well as Global's other media brands, to share content ideas, techniques and improve efficiencies across the group.
  • Work with commercial teams to develop co-branded content including video, native editorial and social.
  • Use analytics to monitor and improve traffic, user experience and trends. Support Smooth's SEO strategy, with support, to increase search traffic to the website. You'll use a problem-solving mindset to analyse root causes and make data-informed improvements to team workflows and audience growth.
  • Research and support guest interviews, providing presenters with key information and finding content opportunities
  • Attend large-scale media events, such as festivals, to capture content and represent the brand

What Success Looks Like
In your first few months, you'll have:

  • You'll lead your team and work closely with broadcast teams to define and produce innovative on-air and digital ideas that will both increase on-air listening and digital reach. As a trusted leader, you'll create and maintain an inclusive and supportive team culture.
  • You'll be a whizz on social media and have strong video editing skills, planning, creating and sharing multimedia content to Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and TikTok, while having unwavering editorial judgement.
  • You'll also be across our editorial output for Smooth and its sister stations (Smooth 80s, Smooth 70s, Smooth Soul, Smooth Relax, Smooth Chill, Smooth Country, and Smooth Christmas), ensuring all digital content aligns with the Smooth brand and compliments our on-air output. You'll bring a solutions-focused approach to problem-solving and decision-making, balancing data-driven insight with editorial intuition.

What You'll Need

  • Management and Leadership experience. We're looking for line management experience, working with a variety of stakeholders to achieve business goals. You'll be confident coaching and developing individuals, providing feedback and support to help them thrive.
  • A solutions focused outlook and positive approach to feedback from across the business. A strong sense of accountability, with the ability to take ownership for results and proactively manage challenges.
  • Outstanding communication skills, both written and verbal. You'll tailor your communication effectively to different stakeholders and platforms.
  • An essential requirement is the ability to build trusted, professional relationships with presenters and key stakeholders across the business. You must be comfortable managing personalities with confidence and professionalism.
  • An obsessive attention to detail with an ability to use data to find opportunities for digital growth.
  • A wide knowledge of film and music is desired: Smooth core artists, country music, 70s and 80s music
  • Several years of experience of writing articles using a CMS - including SEO practices.
  • Photo and video editing skills - a high level of experience on software like Capcut, Canva, Premiere Pro etc.
  • Social media experience - several years of working closely across all social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube), including schedule software such as Buffer.
  • A keen eye for great design and aesthetics, along with an appreciation of other points of view. Desirably, experience of creating templates for social media and other digital platforms
  • Proven track record of developing and managing compelling interactive products with a large user base.
  • Experience of working with a video team to create engaging videos, both for social and owned platforms.
  • A thorough understanding of interactive media and their relation to traditional media.
  • Ability to multi-task and manage / maximise project and opportunities in a mixed media environment.
  • Editorial strategy experience, preferably within a fast-moving entertainment business.
  • Adaptability: Comfort working in a fast-changing media landscape, adjusting plans and approaches to meet shifting demands
