Job Overview
We are seeking an Electrical Installations Lead Engineer specialising in high-voltage (HV) equipment and Air-Insulated Switchgear (AIS) installation. This position is essential for guaranteeing the safe, efficient, and compliant execution of electrical installation activities across UK projects, with a particular focus on substation environments.
What You Will Do
Oversee and verify the design, installation, and commissioning of HV equipment and AIS for electrical construction projects.
Provide technical support during the tendering stage, ensuring accurate work sequencing, realistic durations, and technical feasibility for electrical installation activities.
Serve as the primary technical reference for design verification and on-site electrical works application.
Coordinate effectively between engineering, HSE, and site teams to ensure seamless execution of electrical installations and adherence to project requirements.
Develop and maintain procedures and workflows specific to HV equipment and AIS installation.
Ensure compliance with National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET) procedures for Impressed Voltage (IV) management across all capital plan works/projects, including identifying, assessing, and controlling IV hazards throughout design and delivery stages to maintain a safe system of work within CDM-controlled areas.
Review and produce electrical installation documentation, including:
o Method Statements for HV and AIS installation
o Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs)
o Impressed Voltage Management Plan (IVMP)
Ensure compliance with National Grid standards and relevant technical procedures (TPs, Ts, and SR) for HV installations.
Travel to project sites across the UK as required to support and supervise electrical works.
Experience required :
Experience in electrical engineering works, with a focus on HV substations and AIS installation.
Demonstrable expertise in the installation, testing, and commissioning of HV equipment and AIS systems.
Strong understanding of National Grid technical procedures, safety requirements, and electrical installation standards.
In-depth knowledge of relevant electrical standards (such as BS and IEC) and industry regulations.
Experience in producing and reviewing electrical construction documentation, test plans, and Installation procedures.
Robust primary electrical engineering background with a proven track record of site implementation and leadership, delivering successful outcomes through effective team management and proactive resolution of on-site challenges.
Knowledge of secondary equipment and connections.
Exceptional writing and documentation skills to ensure all procedures, workflows, and records are clear, accurate, and maintained for project execution and compliance.
Proficiency in industry-standard electrical design and documentation software (AutoCAD, Revit, MS Project), document management systems, and Microsoft Office Suite, with experience in digital workflow tools for efficient project deliver
