The Faculty of Natural, Mathematical & Engineering Sciences (NMES) is a vibrant faculty based in the heart of London with a long tradition of world-leading research and teaching in physics, mathematics, chemistry, informatics and engineering.
About the role
We are seeking a maternity cover post for a Senior Communications Manager to lead our Faculty Communications Team across internal and external communications, content creation, events, and web.
The post holder will provide a responsive and comprehensive service offer to stakeholders across the various elements of the team's portfolio, supporting academics to boost their research profile and boost the reputation of the Faculty for research excellence.
The role holder will deliver strategic and operational communications advice to Faculty stakeholders and develop communications plans and strategies in alignment with organisational need. They will closely coordinate and collaborate with stakeholders and partners across the organisation and build and maintain an integrated and mutually beneficial relationship with central teams supporting communications activity.
The post is part of the Enterprise & Engagement (E&E) team, which is responsible for enabling collaborations between the faculty and external stakeholders both in the UK and internationally, increasing the impact of our research and teaching on the outside world and bringing benefits to our staff and students.
This post will be a full time post (35 hours per week), offered on a fixed-term contract from 23/2/2026 until 31/12/2026 or on the return of the substantive postholder. For internal staff, this may be offered on a secondment basis.
About you
To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:
Essential criteria
1. Significant relevant experience in a communications management role.
2. Experience of leading and managing a team, developing their talents, and enabling them to succeed across different areas of communications activity
3. Excellent communication skills, both written and oral with a proven ability to adapt style for a variety of channels and internal and external audiences.
4. The ability to work to a high level of accuracy with attention to detail, striving to produce the highest quality content.
5. Experience of providing expert communications advice and guidance to senior managers and internal / external stakeholders to inform decision making. Influencing, applying judgement and identifying solutions to complex situations, where necessary.
6. Experience of delivering and developing effective communications plans and strategies in support of achieving the organisation's objectives.
7. Excellent interpersonal skills including experience of working with internal and external colleagues and organisations in a positive and collaborative manner.
8. Demonstrable ability to work under pressure with strong time management skills, able to manage projects and multi-task effectively, delivering to tight and sometimes conflicting deadlines.
Desirable criteria
1. Qualification(s) in communications, public relations, or marketing
2. Experience of higher education
3. Experience of science communications.
