Job description

INTERNAL ONLY

Location: Kendal

Contract Type: Permanent

About this opportunity

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced and motivated Area Manager – Building Control to join Westmorland and Furness Council, providing leadership and direction to one of our Building Control area teams within the Thriving Places Directorate.

Our Building Control Service is responsible for ensuring that development across Westmorland and Furness meets the highest standards of safety, quality, and compliance with the Building Regulations and the Building Safety Act. The service also manages the Council's statutory duties for dangerous structures, helping to safeguard residents, businesses, and the built environment.

As an Area Manager, you will lead and manage the day-to-day operations of the Building Control team within your designated geographical area. Reporting to the Senior Manager for Building Control, you will oversee a team of Principal, Senior, and Building Control Surveyors and Trainee Surveyors, ensuring high performance, professional development, and consistent delivery of a customer-focused, compliant, and resilient service.

You will take the lead in managing complex and high-risk projects, overseeing inspections, plan assessments, and certifications, while maintaining strong relationships with developers, architects, contractors, and partners. You will also play a key role in driving continuous improvement, supporting innovation, and ensuring quality and consistency across the service.

Key priorities include:

  • Leading and managing a skilled team of Building Control professionals to deliver high-quality, compliant services.
  • Overseeing the delivery of inspections, plan assessments, and certifications in accordance with Building Regulations.
  • Managing enforcement actions, including dangerous structures procedures.
  • Ensuring compliance, quality assurance, and best practice across all projects and processes.
  • Supporting professional development, mentoring surveyors, and encouraging continuous learning.
  • Promoting innovation, service improvement, and the adoption of new technologies.

This is a fantastic opportunity to take on a key leadership role where you'll make a real difference in maintaining the safety, quality, and sustainability of the built environment across Westmorland and Furness.

Who we are looking for…

We're seeking a confident and experienced Building Control professional with strong leadership skills and a passion for ensuring excellence in compliance, safety, and service delivery. You'll be a proactive and technically skilled manager who can inspire and develop others while maintaining high professional standards.

You will hold full membership of a recognised professional body such as RICS, CABE, or CIOB, and be a qualified Class 3 Building Inspector (or working towards this) as well as a Class 4 Technical Manager. You will also hold a degree or HNC/HND in Building Surveying, Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field.

You will bring:

  • Significant experience in Building Control, with a proven record of managing teams and complex projects.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of UK Building Regulations, construction practices, and the Building Safety Act.
  • Strong project and resource management skills, with the ability to lead multiple projects effectively.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate at all levels.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities to resolve complex compliance and technical issues.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement, professional development, and delivering outstanding customer service.

If you're ready to take the next step in your Building Control career, leading a high-performing team and shaping a modern, resilient, and compliant service, we'd love to hear from you.
