We strive to contribute to the highest standards of patient care and surgical success, making a real impact in healthcare.
About the Role:
As a
Clinical Specialist
or
Clinical Specialist Trainee,
your primary responsibility will be to monitor the integrity of the patient's nervous system during various procedures, including neurosurgery, spinal, orthopaedic, vascular and other surgeries. Working closely with the surgical team, you will provide real-time neurophysiological monitoring, promptly identifying and communicating any changes to help guide surgical decisions and minimise the risk of neurological injury. This involves placing needle electrodes on the patient, operating intraoperative neuromonitoring machines to collect and interpret data, and maintaining continuous communication with the surgeon throughout the procedure. You will remain in the operating theatre for the duration of the surgery, ensuring accurate monitoring while also managing pre- and post-operative duties. If joining as a
trainee,
you will receive
full theoretical and practical training,
including hands-on mentoring, seminars, and independent study, to develop the expertise required for this critical role.
You will be responsible for providing services primarily in and around your designated territory depending on your base, and may be required to travel nationally when necessary.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
· Perform intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (IONM) during surgical procedures such as spinal, brain, brainstem, vascular, and orthopaedic surgeries.
· Utilise modalities such as Somatosensory Evoked Potentials (SSEPs), Motor Evoked Potentials (MEPs), Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potentials (BAEPs), Visual Evoked Potentials (VEPs), Electromyography (EMG), and Electroencephalography (EEG) and others, to assess nervous system function.
· Set up, troubleshoot and operate neurophysiological monitoring equipment.
· Analyse and interpret real-time neurophysiological data to provide immediate feedback to the surgical team.
· Document findings, generate reports, and maintain accurate patient records
· Collaborate with surgeons, anaesthetists, and other medical personnel to optimise patient safety and surgical outcomes.
· Adhere to hospital policies, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices for IONM.
· Stay updated with advancements in neurophysiology and intraoperative monitoring techniques.
· Progress through the training program by completing theoretical exams and practical clinical assessments.
· Create pre- and post-operative reflection documents.
· Daily communication with teammates/seniors.
Requirements for the Role:
· Minimum one year experience in intraoperative neuromonitoring (required for the clinical specialist position). Applicants with less or no experience will be considered for the Clinical Specialist Trainee position.
· A Master's or Doctorate Degree in a neuroscience-related discipline.
· A degree in a relevant scientific discipline (e.g., neurophysiology, neuroscience, or a related field).
· Willingness to travel to various locations across the UK to provide services as needed.
· Fluent in English.
Essential:
· Strong technical and analytical skills.
· Ability to adapt and succeed in a highly skilled clinical environment.
· Excellent communication abilities, and a commitment to patient safety/care.
· Ability to work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary medical team.
· Proactive individual who works well independently and as part of the team.
· Eagerness to learn and continuously improve their knowledge and skills.
· Interest/passion for neuroscience/neurophysiology.
· Willingness to work irregular hours, including early mornings, evenings, and on-call weekends, as required.
Desirable:
· Experience in neurophysiology techniques and surgical procedures.
· Experience with patient care and managing confidential data.
· Previous employment within a healthcare/theatre environment.
· Full UK Driving license.
Additional Benefits Include:
