Contract Type: Permanent | Full-time (37 hours/week, Monday to Friday)

This role is based within the Magnesium R&D Department at our Swinton site, where we design, develop, and support the manufacture of novel magnesium alloys, magnesium powders, and PTFE powders for a range of sectors.
The primary focus of this position is to lead the technical support for powder products and manufacturing, providing customer support while managing continuous improvement and product development projects. Around 25% of your time will also be spent supporting activities in the wider magnesium alloys business.
This is a varied and hands-on role that requires both technical leadership and practical problem-solving. You will work closely with other technical leads, operations, and commercial teams to ensure that R&D and production activities align with business objectives.
The role involves regular travel (approximately six working weeks per year), primarily to the USA, with occasional visits to other locations. Key Responsibilities
- Lead technical development activities within the magnesium powders business
- Act as a technical advisor, providing customer support and guidance
- Manage and contribute to product development and continuous improvement projects
- Participate in the review of internal and external specifications
- Support new supplier qualification and cost-saving initiatives
- Collaborate with other technical leads to ensure the effective running of the R&D department
- Represent Luxfer in technical discussions with customers and suppliers
- Proactively develop new ideas, product concepts, and potential improvements
- Degree-level qualification in a physical science (Chemistry, Materials Science, or Engineering)
- Experience of leading and managing research and development projects
- Proven background in metallurgy, with knowledge of metal processing technologies
- Practical experience with light alloys and understanding of metal powder manufacturing
- Strong grasp of scientific methodology and experimental planning
- Excellent scientific reasoning and analytical skills
- Ability to design experiments and present clear, rational technical arguments
- Competence in independently carrying out research to solve problems
- Strong time management and organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise effectively
- Strong communication skills, with confidence in presenting findings to technical and non-technical audiences
