Job Overview
This is a well-established joint post between the University of Bath and North Bristol NHS Trust with the post being equally split between both roles.
The post holder will be responsible for developing, delivering, and assessing the postgraduate clinical pharmacy diploma and pharmacy courses. These courses are part of the expanding portfolio of Continuing Professional Development courses offered by the Department of Life Sciences (School of Pharmacy) at the University of Bath. The post supports the postgraduate clinical diploma in primary and secondary care. There is also scope to contribute to undergraduate teaching and trainee pharmacist training in the South West.
As with any Teacher Practitioner post a key aspect is utilising experience in current clinical practice in leading the development of others in the profession.
Whilst working within the hospital the post holder will be the Lead Pharmacist to the Trauma and Orthopaedic Speciality. Responsibilities include clinical ward pharmacy, strategic service development, governance as well as line management commitments. There will also be opportunities to input to staff training and development including pharmacy, medical and nursing staff and involvement with the services provided by the largest acute trust in the South West of England.

Main duties of the job
To be responsible for developing, delivering, and assessing units of teaching within the 'AP3T' suite of taught postgraduate programmes as part of the expanding portfolio of Continuing Professional Development courses offered by the Department of Life Sciences (School of Pharmacy) at the University of Bath.
Responsible for the efficient and effective provision, management and development of the Trauma and Orthopaedics clinical pharmacy service in accordance with medicines legislation, the Code of Ethics of the General Pharmaceutical Council, Royal Pharmaceutical Society hospital pharmacy standards, United Kingdom Medicines Information (UKMI) standards and trust policies and procedures.
Provides specialist clinical pharmacy services at a high level to the Trauma and Orthopaedic services within the Neurosciences and Musculoskeletal (NMSK) Division.
Teaches and supervises less experienced colleagues, pharmacists, technicians, and students.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities
- Responsible for the provision, management, and development of a highly specialist
pharmaceutical service to the orthopaedic specialty to achieve a high standard of
efficiency and effectiveness
- Clinically screen prescriptions to ensure the safe, efficient, evidence-based, and
rational use of medicines in line with the BNSSG Formulary and departmental
policies so that risks to patients are minimised
- Contribute to the overall development of the clinical pharmacy service through active
participation in relevant meetings. Work closely with all members of the pharmacy
department and other healthcare professionals
- Demonstrate strong leadership skills across all elements of the role
- Attend consultant and ward board rounds whenever possible to provide
pharmaceutical expertise
- Provide reports on the use and cost of medicines to the orthopaedic specialty as
appropriate and analyse these to advise on strategies to ensure cost-effective use of
resources
- Write relevant protocols, procedures, and guidelines for use within the orthopaedic speciality. 8. Provide pharmaceutical expertise to any multidisciplinary working groups considering protocols, policies, guidelines, and integrated care pathways in the specialist area 9. Assimilate and analyse clinical trial information on new pharmaceutical products intended for use within the orthopaedic speciality for submission to the Area Prescribing and Medicines Optimisation Committee (APMOC 10. Ensure that an accurate medication history is obtained for each patient using the appropriate sources (GP, community pharmacist, patient/carer, clinic notes, nursing home) 11. Deals with high level pharmaceutical queries and provide advice and information to patients/carers/nursing and medical staff in connection with drug treatment 12. Provide a comprehensive clinical ward pharmacy service to the speciality and work with stakeholders to optimise resources and improve patient flow. 13. Work closely with the Discharge Liaison Pharmacist and GPs/community pharmacists where necessary to ensure timely and seamless discharge of patients 14. Record all major interventions made. 15. Investigate and support the recording of adverse drug reactions. 16. Audit and risk manage selected areas of practice to promote continuous quality improvement by affecting change in practice. 17. Maintain and develop medicines management systems in conjunction with patients/carers, ward staff and pharmacy staff. Supervise and contribute to the development of medicines management technicians and/or other dedicated pharmacy staff 18. Contribute to the training of pharmacy undergraduates, medical students, junior doctors, trainee pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and medical and nursing staff as appropriate. Train and mentor pharmacists on aspects of the specialist area 19. Act as a lead for the trauma and orthopaedic speciality 20. Supervise and work closely with the other pharmacy staff in the specialty as their team lead 21. Act as an appraiser in the pharmacy appraisals programme 22. Ensure that all relevant procedures are adhered to, reviewed regularly and that all necessary records are completed 23. Undertake to follow all departmental procedures in accordance with current local practices and legislative requirements 24. Provide professional cover in the dispensary on a sessional basis 25. Keep up to date with developments in pharmacy to maintain a high level of professional knowledge and competence. Attend study days and courses as necessary for the development of the service and the individual. 26. Maintain a record of CPD. 27. Work with the specialty to comply with national and local patient safety drug alerts and initiatives and help with the implementation and recommendation of associated action plans. 28. Provide comprehensive pharmaceutical care to orthopaedic patients in all clinical areas. 29. Undertake any other duties as required by the Director of Pharmacy or their deputy. Teacher Practitioner: 1. Deliver high quality teaching to undergraduate and postgraduate students which is informed by significant professional expertise gained via practice; research/study and/or teaching experience. Contribute to the development of units of study and their assessment regimens, identifying learning objectives and teaching methods, developing materials and resources, including materials for use face to face and online, communicating subject matter clearly and encouraging debate.
- Contribute to the design, implementation and evaluation of assessment tools and criteria for courses, set and mark assessments, ensuring adequate moderation, providing written or oral feedback as appropriate. Mark final assessments as required. 3. Convenorship of designated postgraduate units 4. Liaise with the Programme Lead, Director of Studies, and other teaching staff to ensure teaching is in accordance with postgraduate programme / unit aims and regulations. Coordinate the work of external workshop contributors, external authors and/or markers as appropriate. 5. Engage pro-actively in ongoing professional development both in own subject and in teaching & learning. 6. Participate in programme evaluation, including facilitating student feedback, reflecting on own teaching design and delivery, and implementing ideas for improving own performance 7. Carry out pastoral role for students. Maintain a knowledge and awareness of student support services and be able to identify student behaviour which is of concern or where support is needed and refer students on appropriately for assistance where required. 8. Play an appropriate part in the promotion of the University of Bath as a teaching centre for clinical pharmacy and pharmacy practice at a national and international level 9. Effectively carry out other teaching-related duties as allocated by the Head of Department, Director of AP3T or Programme Lead. Effectively participate in teaching-related administrative activities, for example attend team meetings, Internal Review Meetings and Boards of Examiners as needed
