Job Description: Financial Accountant

Location: 149 Holme Lane, Sheffield, UK. S6 4JR

Salary: Highly competitive, reflecting seniority and specialist expertise

Contract: Full-time, permanent

Reports to: Board of Trustees

About the Role

We are a fast-growing, ambitious organisation with a small but highly professional team, seeking a Senior Financial Accountant to take full ownership of our financial management. This is a standalone, managerial-level role requiring someone capable of working independently, bringing both technical expertise and commercial insight.

The successful candidate will be responsible for preparing statutory accounts, managing tax compliance, and optimising available reliefs for both private companies and charities within our group structure. With minimal internal support, this role is ideal for a highly experienced professional who thrives on autonomy and enjoys shaping the finance function of a young and dynamic organisation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Financial Reporting & Compliance
  • Prepare and file statutory accounts for the holding company and its subsidiaries, including charitable entities, in compliance with Companies House, HMRC, and Charity Commission requirements.
  • Consolidate group accounts and provide timely, accurate reporting to the board and trustees.
  • Manage year-end processes and liaise effectively with external auditors.
  • Taxation & Reliefs
  • Lead on Capital Allowances, R&D Tax Credits, and other UK tax reliefs to maximise financial efficiency.
  • Prepare and submit corporation tax returns, VAT returns, and other statutory filings.
  • Stay up-to-date with relevant tax legislation and provide proactive guidance to the board.
  • Full-Scope Financial Management
  • Maintain ledgers, bookkeeping, reconciliations, and management accounts independently.
  • Prepare forecasts, budgets, and financial analyses to inform strategic decisions.
  • Implement and maintain robust internal controls appropriate to a small, growing organisation.
  • Strategic Advice & Governance
  • Act as the principal financial advisor to the board, delivering clear insights for decision-making.
  • Ensure compliance with governance standards, reporting requirements, and audit expectations.
  • Drive process improvements and support the development of financial systems as the organisation grows.

Person SpecificationEssential Skills & Experience

  • Fully qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA, or equivalent).
  • Extensive post-qualification experience preparing accounts for both private companies and charities.
  • Strong technical expertise in Capital Allowances, R&D Tax Credits, and other UK tax reliefs.
  • Proven ability to work entirely independently, owning the finance function in a small or lean organisation.
  • Experience with multi-entity reporting, including group and consolidated accounts.
  • Deep knowledge of UK GAAP, FRS 102, Charity SORP, and related reporting standards.
  • Excellent organisational skills, able to manage competing deadlines for multiple entities.
  • Advanced IT skills, including accounting software and Excel.
  • Strong communication skills, able to present complex financial information clearly to non-financial stakeholders.

Desirable Attributes

  • Entrepreneurial mindset: flexible, proactive, and solutions-oriented.
  • Ability to contribute strategically to a growing organisation, balancing compliance with business objectives.
  • Experience in small or start-up environments where processes are evolving.

Why Join Us?

  • Autonomy and ownership: You will manage the finance function end-to-end and have direct influence on organisational decisions.
  • Variety and challenge: Work across commercial and charitable entities in a growing, multi-entity structure.
  • High impact: Shape the finance processes and strategy of a young, ambitious organisation from the ground up.
