Role Summary
Under the supervision and control of the Senior Science Technician, to provide assistance and in the preparation of resources for science lessons that meet both the health and safety standards and requirements of the classes involved. To provide support and advice to teaching staff and students under the guidance of the Senior Science Technician. To assist the Senior Science Technician and Assistant Principal for Science in securing an environment in which students can safely pursue investigative practical work.
Key areas of responsibility - What will you be doing
Build Knowledge
- To assist in preparing standard solutions, purifying chemicals, treating chemical waste, etc. under the guidance of the Senior Science Technician.
- To be familiar with and advise staff and pupils on particular hazards of chemicals, materials and equipment in line with CLEAPPS, COSHH, and other relevant health and safety guidelines.
- To remain aware of current safety guidelines and legislation.
- To assist in the completion of risk assessments for technician activities, in accordance with guidance provided by the Senior Science Technician.
- To actively seek and acquire relevant information and expertise.
Build Trust
- To be aware of and adhere to applicable rules, regulations, legislation and procedures e.g. School (Equal Opportunities Policy/Code of Conduct), national legislation (Health and Safety, Data Protection), and in particular the School policy for safeguarding of young people and adults.
- To maintain confidentiality of information acquired in the course of undertaking duties for the department.
- To be responsible for your own continuing self-development, undertaking training as appropriate.
- To undertake other duties appropriate to the grading of the post as required.
Prioritisation
- To assist in the preparation of materials, equipment, resources, experiments and teaching aids for classroom use as directed by the Senior Technician.
- To operate a system of stock control, ensuring sufficient replenishment of materials within the approved limits and recommending any additional equipment/material requirements to Senior Science Technician.
- To assist in ordering stock and checking and sorting of deliveries when received.
- To check deliveries of resources and equipment, ensuring all resources are checked and stored safely and securely.
Clarity and Energy
- To tidy up and clean workshops/laboratories or other relevant working areas, materials and equipment, including breakages, spillages and disposing of waste materials so as to ensure a safe and hygienic working environment at all times.
- To support teachers and students during practical work, to include setting up demonstrations and experiments, providing advice to students in carrying out their tasks, including the safe operation and demonstration of equipment, as directed by the Senior Science Technician/Assistant Principal for Science.
- To construct, assemble and modify apparatus for experiments and demonstrations in preparation for lessons, as directed by the Senior Technician or teaching staff.
- To assist with exhibitions, demonstrations and displays as requested
Follow Up
- To check and test equipment routinely to ensure its good safe working order and to undertake maintenance, repairs and servicing where needed and within the limits of the post holder's skills and training. To recommend any necessary repairs or arrange further maintenance for equipment on the approval of the Senior Science Technician.
- To issue and receive back resources, check for missing and damaged equipment against inventories and inform the Senior Technician and relevant members of the teaching staff.
- To work to the established organisational practices of the department so as to ensure the efficient organisation of work and storage areas, and teaching laboratories, ensuring that all working areas are left in a safe and secure state at all times. To report any concerns to the Senior Science Technician.
Qualifications
Essential
GCSE's or equivalent to include Maths & English at a C grade or above
Good levels of literacy and numeracy
Desirable
A Level Science qualification or above
Experience
Essential
- Knowledge of laboratory equipment and techniques commonly used in school science programs.
- Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
- Proficiency in using basic laboratory software and tools.
- Familiarity with safety protocols and procedures relevant to school science laboratories.
- Effective communication and collaboration skills, particularly when working with students and teachers.
Desirable
- Previous experience of working with children with complex needs/challenging behaviours within a classroom environment or similar
- Experience working with students with diverse backgrounds and learning needs
- Strong ability to work with technology and educational software
- Knowledge of issues relevant to education and child development
