Applications are invited for a 12-month fellowship in Ophthalmology (Corneal) at the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital to commence August 2026 to August 2027.
The Manchester Royal Eye Hospital provides secondary and tertiary care to residents of Greater Manchester and beyond. A wide range of sub-specialties are provided to include, Paediatric Ophthalmology, Oculoplastics, Neuro-ophthalmology & Ocular motility, Cornea/External Eye Disease, Cataract, Glaucoma, Uveitis, Medical Retina and Vitreoretinal surgery.
The Manchester Royal Eye Hospital is part of the Manchester Universities NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) and is situated within a new, dedicated PFI building that includes the Manchester Royal Infirmary, St Mary's Hospital and The Royal Manchester Children's Hospital. Other hospitals within MFT include Wythenshawe Hospital, Trafford General, Altrincham, the Dental Hospital and North Manchester General Hospital.
The Corneal Unit consists of four consultants: Prof Fiona Carley, Ms Jennifer Kim, Mr Andrew Walkden and Mr Leon Au. The post offers wide clinical experience in the management of corneal, external eye diseases and laser refractive surgery. Research is encouraged. The unit is supported by a specialist nurse practitioner and trainees within the NW training programme.
The Fellow attends specialist clinics and dedicated corneal theatre sessions under the direction of the Consultant trainers.
The Fellow will have the opportunity to acquire skills appropriate to Consultant Ophthalmologists providing a major sub-specialist service in a large eye centre. The post offers wide clinical experience in the management of corneal and external eye diseases to include refractive laser surgery. The fellow will gain experience of working in a multidisciplinary environment through close liaison with the corneal nurse practitioner, optometrists to include contact lens practitioners as well as colleagues within Rheumatology, Dermatology, ENT and Oral Medicine (not exhaustive). Most of these specialties are within MFT.
The Fellow will participate actively in the diagnosis, management and follow up of patients under the care of the Consultant. He or she will undertake surgery both under supervision and, where appropriate, unsupervised. Each week Fellows usually are involved in 3 supervised operating sessions together with 2 specialist clinics. There will also be weekly sessions within the refractive laser suite. The Corneal Fellow will also be required to lead an acute corneal clinic once a week. There is an expectation that the Fellow will be expected to supervise some of the work of more junior trainees as part of his or her training experience.
