Job Description
We are looking for a confident and inspiring Technical Team Leader (TTL) to lead and manage a team of technical field staff within APHA, helping to protect animal health, safeguard animal welfare and facilitate International Trade.

You will be responsible for the day-to-day effectiveness of resource management and will prioritise resource and workloads across the team for them to contribute to achieving delivery targets. You will be accountable for ensuing capability to meet performance expectations and your team's ability to respond to emergencies and disease outbreaks working within a matrix management relationship.

This is an exciting, varied, and high-profile role that will also see you regularly liaise with our wider APHA colleagues, Policy colleagues and Operational Partners, as well as create a positive team environment in which everyone can and does contribute. You are expected to be a visible leader and ensure that a clear vision and direction is cascaded to your team.

The role involves a wide range of work including, but not limited to, the following:

  • To lead and manage a team of both local and geographically dispersed technical staff, ensuring optimal deployment of resources to meet delivery requirements.
  • To proactively manage the performance, conduct and attendance of your team, reviewing performance on a regular basis and, where necessary, implement performance improvement plans to support training and development.

Person specification

We are looking for candidates who can demonstrate appropriate skills and experience in the following areas:

  • Experience in leading and managing operational delivery teams, with a strong track record of developing people, managing performance, and building skills in collaboration with functional managers.
  • Planning and organising skills to enable effective work allocation and resource management to deliver challenging targets.
  • Ability to meet changing directions when circumstances dictate, and delivering difficult messages with clarity, purpose and understanding
  • Experience in reporting on activity and target delivery.
  • Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Confidence and ability to challenge constructively to deliver positive outcomes.

Salary
New entrants to the Civil Service are expected to start on the minimum of the pay band. The internal roles rules apply to existing Civil Servants, i.e. level transfers move on current salary or the pay range minimum, transfers on promotion move to new pay range minimum or receive 10% increase. Either case is determined by whichever is the highest.

Location
