At our GKN Filton site, we specialise in the design and manufacture of large complex structural wing assemblies, detailed metallic components and wing systems for a combination of both civil and military aircraft.
We are seeking talented candidates who want to gain exposure to our Chemical Processes and operation environments, while owning and supporting projects to help GKN be the most sustainable partner in the sky. Successful applicants will be expected to support projects in the field of manufacturing engineering, while working in a high-paced team environment, focused on delivering value to GKN customers.
As an intern on a 12 month placement, you will be an important part of our operations taking guidance from one of our engineering managers and will be supported by the site engineering team. You will work as part of a small team responsible for adherence to chemical specification, including sampling & analysis of TSA, Chromic acid & Alocrom 1200 processes.
The placement will start between August 2026 – October 2026 dependent on University requirements
How You'll ContributeIn this role, you will:
Support investigation of the entire value chain for specific areas of the manufacturing business. Identifying opportunities for improvement and new approaches that maximise efficiency and deliver differentiating aerospace manufacturing solutionsDocument research and development activities in technical reports, memos, procedures, specifications and presentationsWork as part of a multi-functional team including design, manufacturing engineering, quality assurance, operations and HSE. Develop processes, working closely with the business units to ensure successful implementation within the manufacturing businessesSupport the 5 GKN principles, supporting the engineering team meeting and surpassing site targets in delivering world-class, differentiating solutionsEnsure/maintain HSE standards and adherence to processes, developing procedures where required to support the implementation of new technologies at FiltonGenerate and support internal and external communications to inform the business of projects and progress, and promote awareness of the team's capabilities Manage inventory of laboratory chemicals and bulk chemicals used in productionCalibration and maintenance of laboratory instrumentsControl of chemical processing baths: Testing, chemical additions and disposalsTest method control and development of new analysis techniquesUsing quality tools to check for variation in measurement processesUnderstanding and complying with Health & Safety legislation when using hazardous chemicalsProviding technical assistance with risk assessments and safe systems of work In addition to:Deliver technical support of manufacturing process development and integration for production Utilize root cause analysis, preventative and corrective action to reduce/eliminate non-conformancesMaintain positive, team relationships with internal and external customers, as well as co-workersContinuously improve production processes by implementing Lean initiatives What You'll Bring
