Teaching hospital: Support research, innovation, and medical education while developing your own expertise.

Meaningful work: Make a real difference to older people with complex needs, delivering personalised, compassionate care.

If you're seeking a role with variety, autonomy, and purpose—this is it.

Help shape the future of geriatric medicine in Nottingham.

The role of the acute medical Geriatrician has been developed over the last 5 years to provide specialist Geriatric medical input to frail older people within the acute medical admission pathway. Our experience shows that patients who are on the Geriatric Assessment Unit, working with a multidisciplinary team results in more frail older people being discharged earlier in the pathway.

We in-reach into the Emergency Department and work alongside the emergency physicians in identifying frailty at the front door. We have also been part of the Acute Frailty Network and labelled a beacon site by them. More consultant geriatricians are being appointed to enable us to deliver this service more consistently across the week. We expect these roles to develop and change over the coming months and years as the acute medical pathways are reviewed so they are better able to meet the increasing demands being put on them.

Be at the forefront of transforming Acute Care for Older People

Over the past five years, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH) has led the way in developing the role of the Acute Medical Geriatrician—placing specialist expertise at the centre of the acute medical admission pathway. This is a role with real purpose and impact.

Through our Geriatric Assessment Unit (GAU), we've demonstrated how early, targeted geriatric input improves outcomes—enabling frail older adults to be assessed, treated, and discharged earlier, avoiding unnecessary hospital stays and ensuring care is tailored to their needs.

Our consultants are embedded in the Emergency Department, working closely with frontline teams to identify and manage frailty from the point of arrival. This proactive approach has earned NUH recognition as a "beacon site" by the Acute Frailty Network.

We are now expanding our consultant team, with a clear commitment to delivering this high-quality service consistently across the week. As demand grows, these roles will continue to evolve—offering opportunities for leadership, innovation, and shaping the future of frailty care.

This is more than a clinical post. It's a chance to lead change, improve patient flow, and make a real difference in the lives of vulnerable older adults.

Join us and be part of something bigger.

Supportive, Flexible, and Future-Focused: A Role Designed Around You

We understand that a fulfilling career is about more than just what happens on the wards—it's about being empowered, supported, and given the space to grow. That's why we've designed this consultant post with flexibility, professional development, and long-term sustainability at its core.

You can find full details of the responsibilities and job description in the attached document, but here's a summary of what you can expect:

A thoughtfully designed Job Plan

Our draft job plan reflects our best current assessment based on a 10 PA model , with the standard split for new consultants at NUH of:

8 PAs Direct Clinical Care (DCC)

2 PAs Supporting Professional Activities (SPA)

This structure allows time for clinical excellence as well as education, leadership, research, and personal development. Additionally, all new consultants in the Geriatric service—aligned with other Royal College of Physicians Group I specialties—are allocated a 0.5 PA contribution to support the generalist and unselected needs of our patients. This contribution can either be provided directly by you or shared across the wider service.

Work-Life balance and flexibility

We welcome applications from consultants who may wish to work part-time or flexibly . If that's you, rest assured that we're committed to creating a bespoke job plan that works for you and the service—developed in collaboration with you and your consultant colleagues.

Your support system from day one

Access to a consultant mentor —either within the department or externally arranged.

Participation in our New Consultants Group , which offers peer support, shared learning, and opportunities for collaboration across specialties.

Annual appraisals and full support for 5-year GMC revalidation .

Primary base & cross-campus working

While the service spans both of our major campuses, your primary base will be the Queen's Medical Centre (QMC) , with structured support in place for any cross-site working.

On-Call and Additional Commitments

Specialty on-call weekends: ~1 in 6

Specialty telephone on-call: ~1 in 25

Acute Medicine Out-of-Hours (OOH) on-call shifts: ~1 in PA)

At NUH, we don't just offer you a job—we offer you a place to belong, a team that values your expertise, and a structure that supports your success. Let's shape the future of geriatric medicine, together.
