What will you be doing?
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Controls Engineer to join our engineering maintenance team. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, implementing, troubleshooting, improving and maintaining automation and control systems across site, ensuring optimal performance of production equipment. This role will collaborate closely with the Operations teams to enhance system reliability, efficiency, and safety.

Key objectives in your role as Controls Engineer include:

  • Designing, programming, and troubleshooting PLC (Programmable Logic Controllers), HMI (Human-Machine Interfaces), and SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems.
  • Maintaining and improving electrical, instrumentation, and automation systems to ensure seamless production processes.
  • Performing diagnostics and root cause analysis on control system failures and implementing corrective actions.
  • Identifying obsolete equipment and implementing rectification accordingly.
  • Developing and implementing preventive and predictive maintenance strategies for automation and control equipment.
  • Working with cross-functional teams to identify opportunities for process improvements and efficiency enhancements.
  • Ensuring compliance with safety standards, industry regulations, and company policies throughout all work undertaken.
  • Providing technical training and support to maintenance and production personnel on control systems.
  • Liaising with suppliers to source components, software, and support services as needed.
  • Assisting in the specifying and commissioning of new equipment and system upgrades, ensuring correct integration into existing infrastructure.
  • Maintaining accurate documentation, including electrical schematics, program backups, and system configurations.
  • Any other ad-hoc duties, as reasonably requested.

Compliance:

  • Adhere to the Company's compliance obligations, policies, processes, and procedures.
  • Report compliance concerns, issues, and failures.
  • Participate in training as required.

What do you need?
You should:

  • Hold a minimum qualification of NVQ level 3 in Electrical Engineering, Automation Engineering or related field.
  • Have previous professional experience in controls engineering, automation, or a similar role within a production/manufacturing environment.
  • Be proficient in PLC programming (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Mitsubishi, etc.) and HMI/SCADA development. Experience with robotics, control, and vision systems would be advantageous.
  • Have a strong understanding of industrial networking, communication protocols (Ethernet/IP, Modbus, Profibus, etc.), and instrumentation.
  • Possess a good knowledge of electrical safety regulations.
  • Be able to read and interpret electrical schematics & wiring diagrams.
  • Have strong problem-solving skills, be able to work under pressure, and have excellent attention to detail.
  • Possess excellent time management and organisational skills, being able to effectively prioritise workloads.
  • Have strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to work with internal and external stakeholders at all levels.
  • Have a flexible approach to travel, as and when required.

It would also be advantageous if you:

  • Had experience with robotics, control, and vision systems.
  • Held a certification in automation, controls, or other electrical engineering disciplines.
  • Has experience with Industry 4.0 technologies, IIoT (Industrial Internet of Things), and cloud-based monitoring systems.
  • Were familiar with Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, and continuous improvement methodologies.
