We have an exciting opportunity to join the expanding Tor team as our new editorial assistant. We are looking for someone who is conscientious, detail-orientated, dedicated and highly organised to provide editorial and administrative support for our busy editorial team on a 12-month fixed-term contract.

Your team:
You will be an integral part of the close-knit, innovative Tor team, working on a wide range of speculative fiction. In autumn 2024 we launched Tor Bramble, our fantasy romance and romantasy list, followed by our horror list, Tor Nightfire, in early 2025. We also have ambitious plans to expand our genre fiction lists further.

Your role:
As the Editorial Assistant, you will play a crucial role in supporting the editorial process from manuscript to publication and will be responsible for the smooth running of our administrative processes. You will have the opportunity to assist in the development and production of a wide range of speculative fiction and be a key support in keeping books on track from the moment of submission all the way through to publication and beyond.

Your key responsibilities:

Providing administrative and editorial support to the editorial team at large.

Reading and reporting on new submissions.

Proofreading jackets and covers and working with the editorial team on cover copy, straplines and other creative copy.

Acting as the main port of call for colleagues who have questions about the publishing schedule, and fielding external enquiries.

Organizing meetings and taking minutes in departmental meetings.

Keeping our Biblio database and book metadata up to date.

Preparing texts for handover to the managing editorial team.

Essential experience, abilities and knowledge you'll need to succeed:

Administration: Excellent administration skills with the ability to organise, prioritise and manage workflow.

Communication: Effective written and oral communication skills.

Organisation: Ability to prioritize tasks and projects while maintaining exceptional attention to detail.

Industry knowledge: A demonstrable passion for books and the publishing industry, particularly the lists of Tor, Tor Bramble and Tor Nightfire.

Curiosity: A proactive willingness to learn new skills and processes, coupled with a genuine interest in seeking out diverse perspectives and a deeper understanding of the market.

Community: An aptitude for teamwork and collaboration, with the ability to act as a supportive, professional main point of contact for colleagues and external partners, contributing to an inclusive environment.

Integrity: A high level of accountability, honesty, and professionalism when managing critical administrative processes, confidential information, and essential publishing data.

Software/tools: Experience working with systems and tools such as MS Office, Adobe Creative Cloud, Google Workspace, and Biblio.

What you'll get in return:
In return, we can offer you an exciting role at the cutting edge of speculative fiction/science fiction and fantasy publishing, a supportive and collaborative working environment, and a competitive salary and benefits package.

Salary: £27,500
