The Center for Global Development—an independent, non-partisan research organization— seeks a full-time Research Fellow for its Education and Child Well-being program. This position will be based in the London office. Under the supervision of Senior Fellow and Program Director David Evans, the Research Fellow will undertake both collaborative and independent research related to the focus area of School Violence.

Research Fellows at CGD support and build on existing empirical research led by Senior Fellows, as well as design original research projects to support and grow existing programs of work. Research Fellows have a specialization in one or more areas of development economics and are expected to interact with external audiences for CGD's work, establishing and growing excellent networks in the development research and funding communities. Research Fellows have experience managing complex research projects and supervising/mentoring/developing more junior colleagues.

The Research Fellow's principal responsibilities will include:
  • Defining, developing, and undertaking creative, empirical research related to the topic area of school violence
  • Publishing journal articles, working papers, books, briefs, blogs, and short commentaries targeted to academics, policymakers, and the general public
  • Participating in the design of expert group consultations and working groups
  • Supervising and providing mentorship for junior colleagues
  • Participating in the preparation grant proposals and the securing of funds from funders interested in the topic of school violence
  • Serving on an internal committee dedicated to improving community within the organization
The successful candidate is expected to have the following qualifications and skills:
  • A doctoral degree in economics with significant knowledge and experience in research related to school violence
  • Experience with field work in multiple low and middle-income countries
  • A record of applying quantitative research methods to real-world problems to identify practical and action-oriented solutions
  • Demonstrated ability to take a project to completion
  • Experience in authoring peer-reviewed publications (at least 2)
  • Experience leading the project management of complex research projects involving external partners
  • Experience mentoring others in a working environment
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experience presenting research at multiple conferences (5+)
  • Ability to work independently within a small, closely-knit organization and to contribute to the development of new initiatives
  • Demonstrated interest in education, direct teaching experience a plus
  • Excellent written and spoken English, plus proficiency in another language used in low- or middle-income countries.

It is the expectation that the successful candidate will be within commutable distance to the offices based in SW1. The successful candidate will need to be in the office a minimum of three days a week.
