The Hull York Medical School is a joint medical school of the Universities of Hull and York, with a reputation as one of the UK's most exciting, contemporary schools. The School is committed to transforming the health of people within the region and beyond – through its students, staff and the impact of its teaching and research.The Senior Anatomy Technician will play a central role in preparing and maintaining high-quality anatomical prosections, supporting educational delivery, and providing technical and session support. The post bridges technical expertise in dissection and specimen preparation with active involvement in practical classes, ensuring that students receive accurate, well-maintained resources and guided support in the anatomy teaching environment. Alongside supporting MBBS, Gateway Year and MSc programmes, the postholder will also contribute to the preparation of cadaveric material for wider School and University needs, including short courses, externally funded projects, and research grants, ensuring materials are available and appropriately prepared for both internal and external stakeholders. The postholder will also play a key role in ensuring accurate information about prosections and cadaveric material is recorded in the School's database, working with the Technical Manager, Designated Individual, and academic staff to ensure that material is clearly catalogued, linked to teaching sessions and assessments, and that updates are reflected in a timely and accurate manner. In addition, the postholder will be expected to work in line with Human Tissue Authority (HTA) guidelines and Health and Safety regulations, contributing to audits, inspections, and best practice in the handling of human material.

The role will be based at the University of Hull, with an expectation of travel to the York campus as required.
The Senior Anatomy Technician will:
Produce high-quality anatomical prosections aligned with curriculum and assessment needs, demonstrating advanced anatomical knowledge and technical skill. Ensure prosections are maintained and catalogued for repeated use and educational continuity.
Assist with embalming and preservation using techniques such as Thiel, formalin and plastination. Operate and maintain specialist equipment safely, working to relevant SOPs and COSHH compliance. Training will be provided as required.
Provide support in anatomy sessions, demonstrating and assisting students in the identification of structures, under the supervision of academic staff. Support small group demonstrations, postgraduate courses, and short courses. Demonstration duties will be scheduled in collaboration with the Anatomy Technical Manager to ensure effective workload management.
Prepare and maintain teaching spaces, ensuring timely provision of prosections, models, AV equipment, and other resources. Monitor equipment condition and liaise with suppliers as needed. Assist with monitoring the stock of consumables, chemicals, and equipment, arranging orders and liaising with suppliers as needed. Ensure facilities are safe, clean, and ready for use.
Manage the quality, storage, and traceability of prosected material, ensuring consistency and availability for teaching and assessment. Maintain accurate records in the School's database, working with the Anatomy Technical Manager, DI, and academic staff to ensure alignment with learning outcomes and HTA compliance.
Act as a designated person under the HTA license, supporting the DI in compliance with licensing conditions and maintaining legal and ethical standards in the handling of human tissue. Maintaining respectful and safe handling of donors in line with Health and Safety, and COSHH regulations.
Coordinate with academic staff and technical colleagues to ensure timely availability of specimens and resources in line with curriculum needs and assessment requirements.
Provide sensitive and professional support for students working with cadaveric material, addressing concerns and ensuring a respectful and inclusive learning environment.
Assist with the organisation and invigilation of anatomy practical examinations, including the preparation of relevant prosections, spotter stations and associated administrative materials.
Prepare and review risk assessments and standard operating procedures (SOPs); contribute to the development of health & safety documentation (including COSHH) and deliver inductions for staff, students, and visitors to ensure compliance with HTA and institutional regulations.
Contribute to the writing and review of technical instructions, standard operating procedures (SOPs), risk assessments, and regulations relevant to the role.
Provide delegated support for the body donation (bequeathal) process under the direction of the Technical Manager, including assisting with donor-related procedures and communications where appropriate, and ensuring all activities are undertaken sensitively and in line with HTA requirements.
Provide informal supervision, mentoring, and skills training for junior technical staff, demonstrators, students, and academic staff where appropriate. This includes demonstrating the safe operation of specialist equipment, dissection techniques, and processes (individually or in groups), to support skill development, safe working practices, and the effective delivery of anatomy teaching.
Serve as a first Aider, contributing to the safety and wellbeing of staff, students, and visitors within the anatomy facilities.
Act as a key holder and named out-of-hours contact for the anatomy facilities, supporting security protocols and emergency response procedures.
Participate in service development by suggesting improvements to technical processes, teaching resources, and operational procedures.
Essential
Degree in anatomy, physiology, biomedical sciences, or a related subject, or equivalent qualification/experience.
Can demonstrate experience of human cadaveric dissection and/or prosection, with the ability to produce high-quality educational specimens.
Knowledge of gross human anatomy sufficient to carry out accurate and educationally valuable prosections.
Knowledge of the Human Tissue Act (2004), HTA codes of practice, and compliance requirements.
Knowledge of Health and Safety legislation in mortuary and anatomy settings.
Can demonstrate experience supporting teaching in an anatomy context (e.g. acting as a demonstrator or providing technical support).
Can demonstrate attention to detail in record-keeping and willingness to contribute to specimen catalogues or databases.
Desirable
Postgraduate qualification (e.g. MSc in Clinical Anatomy or related discipline).
Can demonstrate experience of embalming and preservation techniques (e.g. Thiel, formalin, plastination).
Can demonstrate experience using large-scale preparation equipment (e.g. band saws) and handling hazardous chemicals, with appropriate training.
Can demonstrate experience supporting or contributing to body donation (bequeathal) processes, undertaken with sensitivity and professionalism.
Can demonstrate experience contributing to assessment activities (e.g. practical exams, spotter stations).
Can demonstrate experience liaising with clinical or industry partners.
Pay Band 6
£33, £38,784.00 per annum.
