Our client is a leading, privately owned logistics and distribution business with a turnover of around £250 million, operating a nationwide network that delivers exceptional service to major retail and manufacturing partners. The business is recognised for its customer-centric approach, operational excellence, and investment in people and technology. With a culture built around continuous improvement and accountability, they are now seeking an accomplished Head of Transport to lead a large-scale transport operation from their Chorley site.

The Role

Reporting to the Operations Director, the Head of Transport will be responsible for the strategic and day-to-day leadership of the transport function, ensuring the safe, compliant, and cost-effective delivery of goods across the UK. You'll manage a high-performing management team, a large driver workforce, and a modern fleet — driving improvements in efficiency, service, and sustainability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop the transport management team to deliver operational excellence across multiple sites.
  • Ensure full compliance with all statutory transport legislation, including O-licence undertakings, driver hours, and vehicle maintenance.
  • Own the transport P&L, delivering against budget and identifying opportunities for cost optimisation and performance improvement.
  • Work closely with customers, planning, and warehouse operations to ensure seamless end-to-end service delivery.
  • Champion health, safety, and sustainability initiatives across the transport network.
  • Implement and enhance KPIs, performance reporting, and route optimisation tools.
  • Drive strategic projects relating to fleet renewal, technology integration, and environmental performance.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key internal and external stakeholders, including regulators and major customers.

About You

  • Proven experience leading large-scale transport operations within a complex logistics, FMCG, or retail environment.
  • Strong commercial acumen with the ability to manage budgets and deliver cost efficiencies.
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills, able to inspire teams and build an accountable, performance-driven culture.
  • Demonstrable experience in process improvement and implementing best practice transport systems.
  • In-depth knowledge of transport legislation and compliance requirements.
  • Degree educated with CPC National & International qualifications (essential).
