Café Kitchen Lead – Café Lido, Portishead

A hands-on leadership role for someone who loves baking and community.

Pay: £15 per hour

About the Role

We're looking for an experienced and enthusiastic Café Kitchen Lead to set up and run the new kitchen at Café Lido – our community café overlooking the beautiful Portishead Outdoor Pool and Estuary. This is a fantastic opportunity to shape our food offer from the start, focusing on delicious, homemade cakes and a simple, seasonal menu to be enjoyed by the early-morning swimmers, lunchtime visitors, and afternoon tea guests.

You'll also support small-scale catering for birthday parties, venue hire buffets, and community events. As the café grows, you'll have the chance to develop the kitchen, grow the team, and contribute to future menu ideas and events.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create and deliver a simple, high-quality menu centred around freshly baked cakes, light lunches, and afternoon teas.
  • Develop seasonal dishes and daily specials suited to our community audience.
  • Establish all kitchen systems, stock control, and hygiene processes.
  • Recruit, train, and lead a new kitchen team in a supportive, positive way.
  • Maintain excellent food hygiene, safety, and allergen standards.
  • Manage relationships with local suppliers and oversee food ordering.
  • Collaborate with the Café Manager on catering for events and functions.
  • Continually improve and adapt the offer as the café develops.

Café Lido is part of a much-loved community hub in Portishead, supporting the charity-run outdoor pool. We pride ourselves on friendly service and a welcoming atmosphere for swimmers, families, walkers, and locals alike.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Previous experience in a professional kitchen, ideally as a cook, baker, or café lead.
  • Strong practical cooking and baking skills – especially cakes and homemade bakes.
  • Organised and confident setting up systems and processes.
  • Friendly, positive, and supportive leadership style.
  • Passion for fresh, local produce and quality presentation.
  • Flexible, reliable, and motivated to help the café grow.

Working Hours

Full-time (around 40 hours per week). We're happy to discuss the weekly shift pattern to suit both your availability and the café's needs — the right fit is more important than a fixed rota. Some flexibility is needed for special events and occasional weekends, to be agreed in advance.
