Wellbeing and Disability Adviser

About the Position:

As a Student Wellbeing and Disability Adviser, you will be a support specialist and provide comprehensive support to students managing the impact of disabilities or additional needs. This role involves offering expert advice, guidance, and signposting services to promote student well-being and inclusivity within the student community. The role plays a vital part in fostering an inclusive and supportive campus environment where all students can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. You will be responsible for developing the student wellbeing support service for LD Training, ensuring we meet the needs of our students and that our services are accessible.

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential Skills and Experience

· Educated to degree level or equivalent.

· Possess relevant professional qualifications and training in mental health, disability, or SEN-related disciplines (e.g., Social Work, Occupational Therapy, Psychology, Teaching, Counselling, or equivalent).

· Recognised Level 2 in Counselling Qualification.

· Registration with a relevant professional body to ensure quality assurance and continuous professional development (e.g., BACP, HCPC, or NADP).

· Evidence of continuous professional development in a range of areas related to disability, SEN, or wellbeing.

· Proven experience supporting students with Special Educational Needs (SEN), including but not limited to Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), ADHD, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, and Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.

· Minimum of 2 years' experience providing one-to-one or group support to students with disabilities and/or SEN within an educational environment (college, university, or specialist provision).

· Working knowledge of current disability and SEN legislation (Equality Act 2010, SEND Code of Practice 2015, Mental Health Act 2007, and Mental Capacity Act 2005).

· Understanding of inclusive learning practices, assistive technology, and reasonable adjustments in education.

· Knowledge of specialist organisations and referral agencies supporting individuals with disabilities or SEN.

· Experience in managing crises and safeguarding concerns involving vulnerable students.

· Excellent interpersonal, communication (written and verbal), and collaboration skills, with the ability to adapt communication to suit neurodiverse learners.

· Excellent problem-solving and analytical abilities, with a calm, empathetic approach in challenging situations.

· Self-motivated, flexible, and committed to maintaining confidentiality and professional standards, with a flexible approach to work and working hours.

Desirable Skills and Qualifications:

· OCR SpLD Diploma or equivalent.

· NASEN or other accredited SEN qualifications (e.g., Level 3 Award in Supporting Learners with Special Educational Needs).

· Professional/vocational qualification in Mental Health or Autism Support.

· Training in Autism awareness, ADHD management, or sensory processing differences.

· Membership of a professional body such as the National Association of Disability Practitioners (NADP).

Safeguarding Certificate (Level 2 or above).

Key Responsibilities

· Provide one-to-one support to students with disabilities and SEN, ensuring an inclusive and supportive experience throughout their studies.

· Conduct assessments to identify individual student needs and develop Individual Support Plans (ISPs) or equivalent Individual Education Plans (IEPs).

· Collaborate with academic and pastoral staff to ensure adjustments and support strategies are effectively implemented.

· Work closely with external professionals (e.g., Educational Psychologists, Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists) to coordinate specialist support for students with complex needs.

· Lead on safeguarding and welfare concerns, ensuring appropriate escalation and support are in place.

· Develop self-help resources, wellbeing toolkits, and training materials tailored to SEN and disability-related needs.

· Provide advice and signposting to statutory and voluntary services, maintaining up-to-date knowledge of local and national support networks.

· Encourage early disclosure of disabilities and SEN needs, ensuring support is embedded from the start of the student journey.

· Deliver staff and student workshops on mental health, neurodiversity, and inclusive learning practices.

· Ensure compliance with the Equality Act 2010 and SEND Code of Practice in all reasonable adjustments and support recommendations.

· Liaise with Student Finance England and other funding bodies regarding Disabled Students' Allowance (DSA) applications.

· Maintain accurate, confidential records and contribute to regular service reviews to enhance student wellbeing provision.

· Participate in recruitment, induction, and open-day events as required.

· Undertake any other duties as directed by the line manager to support the wellbeing and inclusion of students.

Knowledge and Understanding

• Understanding of SEN frameworks, including the SEND Code of Practice (2015), and their application in further and higher education.
• Awareness of neurodiversity and inclusive teaching strategies for students with additional needs.
• Familiarity with assistive technology and learning support tools that promote independence and access to learning.
• Strong knowledge of safeguarding, behaviour management, and duty of care responsibilities.
