Learning Mentor (SEMH) within ASPIRE at Sir John Nelthorpe School
Grade 6, Scale Point 14-20
35 hours per week, term time + 5 training days
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the team at Sir John Nelthorpe School's ASPIRE Centre — a purpose-built, nurturing environment that supports Children and Young People with recognised Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.
We are seeking a committed and compassionate Learning Mentor (SEMH) to play a key role within the Centre, providing targeted emotional, social, and academic support for pupils with additional needs. This role is central to helping pupils build confidence, resilience, and a sense of belonging — enabling them to re-engage positively with learning and school life.
As a Learning Mentor within the ASPIRE Centre, you will:
- Support and liaise closely with the ASPIRE Centre Managers to ensure the smooth daily running of the provision.
- Act as the Learning Support Lead, advising and supporting colleagues, including teachers, teaching assistants, and external professionals.
- Demonstrate strong working knowledge and understanding of pupils with SEND and SEMH needs.
- Provide consistent and compassionate wellbeing support for pupils.
- Promote a positive image of the school to pupils, staff, parents, and visitors at all times.
- Contribute to the team ethos of the ASPIRE Centre and the wider school community.
- Ensure high-quality, differentiated learning materials are available, and liaise with teaching staff to make any necessary adaptations.
- Supervise pupils during unstructured times, including free time, lesson transitions, arrivals, and departures.
- Model and promote positive behaviour and emotional regulation through effective relationships and restorative approaches.
- Support pupil progress in line with individual Centre Pathway Plans, developing strategies that meet identified needs.
- Share concerns, progress, and achievements with the Centre Manager to ensure consistent monitoring and support.
- Supervise pupils in small group sessions both within and outside the classroom, ensuring appropriate risk assessments are in place.
- Support a calm, structured start-of-day routine and contribute to maintaining a positive learning atmosphere throughout the day.
- Adhere to all safeguarding procedures and school policies.
Implement, monitor, and evaluate One Page Profiles and Behaviour Support Plans to promote pupil wellbeing and progress.
We are looking for someone who:
- Has experience working with pupils who have SEMH or additional learning needs.
- Demonstrates empathy, patience, and resilience in supporting young people to overcome barriers.
- Has strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Works effectively as part of a team, while also showing initiative and independence.
- Is committed to promoting inclusion, wellbeing, and aspiration for all pupils.
- Relevant qualifications or training in SEMH support, behaviour management, or child development would be advantageous.
The ASPIRE Centre is a dedicated provision at Sir John Nelthorpe School, designed to support up to 14 pupils on full-time or part-time placements. It provides tailored interventions, structured routines, and therapeutic support within a safe, inclusive environment. The Centre plays a vital role in ensuring every pupil can access the right pathway to success — whether that means reintegration into mainstream lessons or sustained bespoke provision.
