Main duties

  • Provide high-quality, family-centred care to children and young people across one of our core areas: Day Surgery, Children's Ward, or Level 2 HDU (depending on post offered).
  • Support children through the perioperative pathway in Day Surgery, including admission, pre-op preparation, post-op recovery, and safe discharge.
  • Deliver safe, effective assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care in line with Trust policies and national standards.
  • Monitor and respond to the clinical condition of children, escalating concerns appropriately and working collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team.
  • Administer medications safely, recognising and reporting any deviations, and maintaining accurate, timely documentation.
  • Provide emotional support and clear communication to children and families, promoting a positive experience and involving them in care decisions.
  • Maintain high standards of infection prevention and control, safeguarding, and risk management at all times.
  • Participate in clinical skills development relevant to the areathis may include enhanced monitoring and interventions when rotating into Level 2 HDU.
  • Contribute to creating a safe, organised, and child-friendly environment, ensuring equipment is checked, safe, and used appropriately.
  • Engage in continuing professional development, attending training, simulation, and reflective learning opportunities as required.
  • Support service improvement initiatives and quality audits to enhance patient outcomes and the experience of children and their families.

Key Requirements

  • Registered Children's Nurse (RNC / RSCN) or equivalent qualification, with valid NMC registration.
  • Experience working with children and young people in an acute hospital or community setting.
  • Strong clinical assessment skills and the ability to recognise and escalate deterioration promptly.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to support, reassure, and engage children and families effectively.
  • Ability to work confidently as part of a multidisciplinary team, contributing to safe and coordinated care.
  • Commitment to maintaining high standards of safeguarding, infection control, and patient safety.
  • Good organisational skills, with the ability to manage a busy workload and respond flexibly to changing priorities.
  • Willingness to develop new skills relevant to the allocated area, including enhanced competencies for those rotating into Level 2 HDU.
  • A compassionate, calm, and resilient approach, particularly when supporting children and families during stressful or emotionally challenging situations.
  • Enthusiasm for ongoing professional development, reflective practice, and participating in training and quality improvement initiatives.
