An exciting opportunity has arisen on the Clinical Research Facility (CRF) for an enthusiastic passionate nurse to develop their leadership and management skills.
You will need to be self-motivated, passionate and a team player in order to provide the high standard of care we deliver to our patients. You will be part of a team of band 6 staff supporting the CRF manager. You will be required to co-ordinate and manage the unit on a regular basis understanding the requirements and acuity of early phase trial activity and the required skill mix to ensure safe service delivery.
The post holder will be a key member of the CRF team, demonstrating initiative and vision in continuing to move the service forward whilst assisting and supporting the Unit Manager in implementing service changes / developments.
Develop and maintain the level of clinical skills necessary to perform highly specialised procedures as per study requirements alongside supporting junior staff to develop and maintain their expertise.
Support the unit manager in co-ordinating and managing the unit demonstrating an awareness of the patient acuity and the skill mix required to deliver trial activity safely.
Facilitate the delivery of specialised patient focused, protocol driven research in collaboration with patient, relatives, research teams and the Multidisciplinary team.
Take a lead role in the clinical and professional development of new nursing staff to the MCRF and act as mentor/preceptor to junior nurses encouraging a high level of motivation in all involved.
Undertake management of staff members as requested by the Unit Manager
Support and assist the Unit Manager in the development of core practice standards and contribute to clinical audit to maintain and improve clinical and research practice.
The Christie is one of Europe's leading cancer centres, treating over 60,000 patients a year. We are based in Manchester and serve a population of 3.2 million across Greater Manchester & Cheshire, but as a national specialist around 15% patients are referred to us from other parts of the country.

We run one of the largest early clinical trial units in Europe with over 300 trials every year. Cancer research in Manchester, most of which is undertaken on the Christie site, has been officially ranked the best in the UK.
The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Clinical Research Facility (CRF) at the Christie is one of six units which together comprise the NIHR Manchester CRF. We provide the infrastructure for the delivery of early phase experimental and translational research in Oncology including first in human.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Clinical
Act in a manner consistent with The Code NMC carrying out the role in accordance with locally agreed policies and procedures.
Develop and maintain level of clinical skills necessary to perform highly specialised procedures as per study requirements alongside supporting junior staff to develop and maintain their expertise.
Support the unit manager in co-ordinating and managing the unit demonstrating an awareness of the patient acuity and the skill mix required to deliver trial activity safely.
Facilitate the delivery of specialised patient focused, protocol driven research in collaboration with patient, relatives, research teams and the Multidisciplinary team.
Ensure that care delivered is patient centred and where possible evidence based whilst in accordance with the research protocol and maintaining the rights of the patient.
Ensure familiarity with risk issues pertaining to confidentiality of participant and research related documentation (Data protection Act, 1994, Caldicott 1999, GDPR Regulation 2018)
Continuously evaluate the quality of care given, regularly reassessing the needs of the research patients and effect changes as required in consultation with the participant, the research teams and the multidisciplinary team.
Ensure patient care is delivered according to Christie Foundation Trust policies and procedures.
Support and assist the Unit Manager in the development of core practice standards and contribute to clinical audit to maintain and improve clinical and research practice.
Ensure clear accurate records to support and record all research activity within the facility.
Promote and collaborate in developing good working relationships, maintaining good communication systems with teams both within and outside the department to ensure that the patients have an effective and efficient research experience.
Be responsible and accountable for all aspects of own work, including management of patients in your care
Seek opportunities to develop own research skills adapting to any changes in the research requirements of new studies
Ensure safeguarding principles and policies are adhered to
Maintain relevant professional registration and revalidation requirements as per NMC requirements.
Attend clinical trial related meetings as required.
Leadership & Management:
Develop and maintain organisational and managerial skills relevant to the role by co-ordinating, delegating and supervising clinical research activity each day.
The post holder will recognise and understand the delegation of responsibility and accountability for patient care in the absence of the Unit Manager.
Support the Unit Manager in day-to-day supervision of junior staff and students ensuring ongoing staff development.
Act as a professional role model, through commitment to the integration into practise of Trust policies and procedures.
Act as an advocate for staff, participants and their relatives at all times in line with the Christie Values
Assist with the orientation and induction of new staff and act as a 'buddy' to colleagues
Attend and contribute to clinical team meetings when appropriate
Ensure that working practices adhere to health and safety polices, and be responsible for reporting of any incidents
Ensure planning and organisation of complex activities across a range of studies in collaboration with the research teams and the Multidisciplinary teams.
Undertake management of staff members as requested by the Unit Manager
Regularly liaise and report to Department Manager / Senior Nurse Unit on unit affairs and staff development.
Training & Education:
Take a lead role in the clinical and professional development of new nursing staff to the MCRF and act as mentor/preceptor to junior nurses encouraging a high level of motivation in all involved.
Participate in the development and delivery of training and education for junior staff.
Participate in Trust annual mandatory training.
Act as a resource for investigators and staff using the facility
Act as a resource for members of the multi-disciplinary team from Trusts and Universities.
