Electronic Obsolescence Engineer

Location: Worsley, Manchester

Salary: £40,000 – £50,000 per annum

Schedule: 4-day working week (Monday – Thursday, 9.75 hours per day)

Overview

Our client is seeking an experienced Electronic Obsolescence Engineer to join our team in Worsley, Manchester. This role plays a key part in ensuring the long-term sustainability and reliability of complex electronic and hardware systems used within the defence, oil & gas, and nuclear sectors.

The successful candidate will take ownership of obsolescence management — identifying, assessing, and mitigating component and product lifecycle risks across our electronic systems. You'll work closely with engineering, supply chain, and quality teams to maintain system availability, compliance, and performance throughout the product lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

  • Proactively manage and monitor component obsolescence across multiple electronic and hardware systems.
  • Analyse Bills of Materials (BOMs) to identify high-risk or obsolete components and develop mitigation plans.
  • Liaise with suppliers and manufacturers to source alternative or replacement components.
  • Support design and development teams with component selection and risk evaluation during new projects.
  • Maintain and update obsolescence databases and lifecycle management tools.
  • Prepare detailed obsolescence reports and communicate findings to internal stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant industry standards and quality requirements across defence, nuclear, and energy projects.
  • Provide technical support and advice on electronic and hardware issues related to obsolescence.

Skills & Experience Required

  • Degree in Electronic Engineering (or equivalent discipline) – essential.
  • Strong technical understanding of electronic and hardware systems, including PCB-level components, circuits, and embedded systems.
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and organisational skills.
  • Experience working within defence, oil & gas, or nuclear environments (advantageous).

Working Pattern

  • 4-day work week – Monday to Thursday
  • 9.75 hours per day
  • Long weekends every week for enhanced work–life balance
