Support Worker – Children & Young People (Prevention, Transitions & Supported Living 16+)

Location: Newport, Cwmbran & surrounding areas

Salary: £12.60 per hour (above Real Living Wage)

Contract: Temporary, seasonal contract with opportunities for bank and zero-hour positions. We are looking for flexible staff who are available to work 12-hour shifts, including days, nights, weekends, and bank holidays as required. Successful applicants may be offered additional shifts based on service needs and individual availability.

Touchstone Support Services (TSS) is expanding and we are seeking passionate Support Workers to help children and young people with mental health needs, learning disabilities, complex trauma and substance misuse difficulties achieve their full potential.

Our Focus

We support children and young people to:

  • Remain safely in their communities through strong early intervention
  • Prevent placement breakdown, crisis escalation and unnecessary restrictive settings
  • Avoid admission to Secure Children's Homes, CAMHS inpatient wards and crisis units
  • Successfully transition from secure care, mental health inpatient units or residential care back home or into the community
  • Develop independence through our supported living model for 16+, enabling a positive transition into adulthood and future opportunities

Who We Support

Young people aged 8–25 with:

  • Mental health needs (moderate–severe)
  • Learning disabilities and/or autism
  • High-risk behaviours or exploitation concerns (CSE/CCE)
  • Substance misuse and dual-diagnosis needs
  • Complex trauma, attachment difficulties or adverse childhood experiences

What You'll Do

  • Build trusting, therapeutic relationships rooted in trauma-informed practice
  • Support emotional regulation and resilience using positive behaviour support
  • Promote independence through budgeting, self-care, cooking, tenancy skills and daily living routines
  • Engage young people in community activities such as sports, creativity, fitness and education
  • Work closely with CAMHS, social workers, families and other professionals to ensure continuity of care
  • Contribute to risk assessments, safeguarding and safety planning
  • Empower young people to set goals and make meaningful progress toward adulthood

What We're Looking For

Full UK Driving Licence — Essential

(Accessing community and transport required)

Experience or strong interest in working with people affected by:

  • Mental health, trauma, learning disabilities or substance misuse
  • Challenging or high-risk behaviours
  • Transitions into adulthood or semi-independent living

Confidence in lone working and maintaining professional boundaries

Calm under pressure, solution-focused and proactive

Flexible to work varied shifts across multiple locations

Desirable Experience

Residential childcare

Semi-independent 16+ supported living

Mental health inpatient units

Emergency services / Armed forces / Prison or secure environment

Community outreach, crisis response or statutory work

Young parents & babies

Desirable Knowledge & Training

  • Trauma-informed practice / ACEs / PACEs
