Recreational Youth Worker

Every young person has challenges, and most need an escape in some way. The purpose ofthis role is to develop and deliver an exciting, engaging and inclusive programme of activities which will engage young people aged 8 – 19 years (up to 25 for young people with additional needs) at WEST Youth Zone. Youth workers plan and deliver high quality youth work that supports young people in their personal, social and educational development. The role will require you to assist with our Juniors (8-12 yrs) or Seniors (13-19, up to 25 with additional learning needs). You will be supporting our young people in accessing the range of fantastic activities that we have on offer.

Open 7 days a week including school holidays, WEST Youth Zone's purpose is to help young people grow to be happy, healthy and successful adults. Our state-of-the-art building provides young people with a range of activities, giving young people the opportunity to try new things, meet new friends and gain support from friendly, warm and positive staff and volunteers. You will be working in the Rec, which is an integral part and considered the heart beat of the Youth Zone.

Key Responsibilities

• Wellbeing and Health Workshops
• Personal Youth Development
• Any style of Hair, Makeup and nails including but not limited to Classic Hairstyles, Braiding and protective styles (Locs and Bantu Knots) and Creative and trendy styles. Natural and Glamour Makeup and artistic/creative styles. Natural nails or extensions, Biab or Bio Sculpture and press ons.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

• To become part of a forward thinking, innovative and motivated team and assist with the delivery of all aspects of the youth zone sessions with young people.
• To work well in a team bringing fresh skills & ideas to the current offer.
• To motivate, encourage and support young people to try activities and participate fully in sessions.
• To make the environment fun and a place the place young people want to be.
• To encourage attendance and participation in rec activities, particularly by young people who are disengaged or do not usually participate in sessions.
• To be an active member of the team and operate in line with the values and principles of WEST Youth Zone.
• To be able to deliver fun, engaging and innovative activities that help contribute to young people developing life skills.
• Deliver, facilitate, and encourage young people to try a range of activities for young people that encompass our Try, Train, and Team ethos.
• Planning and delivering projects for young people to take part in, again with the Try, Train, Team ethos in mind.
• To encourage and ensure young people are at the heart of the planning and delivery of the Rec Programme.
• To support young people, coaching them to achieve their full potential within their given roles.
• To be able to think on your feet and deliver an activity with minimal equipment and to be resourceful.
• Ability to enthuse others including core staff, youth workers, volunteers, and young people.
• To deal with any problems that arise during Youth Zone sessions.
• Develop and maintain a professional relationship with the young people who attend WEST Youth Zone.
• Understand the needs of WEST Youth Zone and communicate them in a clear, consistent way to the young people, parents and guardians.
• Work within the performance framework of WEST Youth Zone and OnSide

SELECTION CRITERIA

EXPERIENCE

• Experience of working with groups of young people aged 8 to 19, or up to aged 25 with a disability.

• Experience of delivering group actvities and working with large groups of Young People

• Experience of working in a team as well as independently

• Experience of running competitions, tournaments and showcase events

• Experience of delivering events / displays

• Experience of delivering events,displays or exhibitions .

• Experience of working with young people from diverse backgrounds and with challenging needs

• Youth Work Level 2 or 3 Qualification

• Ability to plan and evaluate the programme of activities, including session plans for both universal session and events.
