Senior Health and Safety Advisor

Join our professional and forward-looking Health, Safety and Wellbeing (HSW) service at a pivotal and ambitious phase in strengthening HSW across Sheffield Hallam University.

As part of the Governance, Legal and Compliance Directorate, we are a skilled team, supporting Colleges and departments across the University to meet their responsibilities under the Health & Safety at Work Act and associated regulations.

Working alongside Academics, Researchers, Technical Operations, Human Resources, Estates and Facilities colleagues, we aim to ensure all staff and students can work, learn and thrive in a safe environment.

We are delivering a University-wide improvement programme to modernise our safety culture, strengthen risk management and compliance, and embed proportionate, enabling and effective HSW arrangements.

As part of this, our team partners with managers, staff, students and trade unions to develop effective systems, processes and policies aligned to sector standards. Key priorities include improving safety management systems, supporting risk owners, enhancing training and competence, monitoring compliance, learning from incidents and supporting safe hybrid and campus-based working.

We're seeking a confident, proactive, solution-focused and action-orientated HSW professional who can operate effectively within a complex environment. Candidates must hold, as a minimum, a NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety, or an equivalent recognised qualification, and be able to demonstrate strong experience in HSW practice.

In this role, you will:

• Provide proactive, professional HSW advice and develop and deliver training across the University.
• Support the development and implementation of procedures and arrangements that ensure legal compliance and good practice.
• Inspect, audit, monitor and report on safety standards across Colleges, Directorates and Research Centres.
• Champion a strong safety culture through coaching, training and collaborative working.
• Contribute to incident investigation, root-cause analysis and the sharing of learning across the University.
