We're a company of ambitious, collaborative problem-solvers who get things done – we're looking for like-minded people to join us.
We help people live their best lives. We help them with the big stuff, for the moments that matter: Pensions, Savings, Investments. At Aegon, we strive in creating a diverse organisation that plays a meaningful role in driving greater equity, inclusion and belonging.
Technology is at the centre of our organisation, it's pivotal to the way we do business every day and achieving our mission. Our technology function is transforming - we want to change how we work, improve our technology architecture incrementally, be better at engineering, build out our data capability and drive innovation.
We are recruiting for a Principal Developer to help with this. In this role, you will be responsible for leading and overseeing the development and solution architecture of complex applications, ensuring high-quality code, and driving technical excellence across the team. You will collaborate closely with product managers, designers, and other stakeholders to deliver innovative software solutions. You will work with senior level stakeholders to build a roadmap and backlog for your capabilities which support our business objectives. You will also run and operate each capability through all lifecycle stages including production environments to ensure it operates within defined SLAs.
Key Responsibilities include:
- Leading and mentoring a team of full stack developers, providing technical guidance, code reviews, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
- Architecting, designing, and developing robust and scalable web applications using ReactJS, AngularJS, and other relevant technologies.
- Collaborating with cross-functional teams to understand business requirements, design solutions, and ensure timely delivery of projects.
- Driving and leading best practices for coding standards, code reviews, and ensure adherence to quality assurance processes across the Aegon technology estate.
- Identify opportunities to improve development efficiency through automation and implement appropriate tools and frameworks.
- Participate in the agile development process, including sprint planning, retrospectives, and daily stand-ups.
We'd love to hear from you if you have:
- Proven experience as a Lead Full-Stack Developer, with a strong focus on web application development.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and mentor development teams, providing technical guidance and conducting code reviews.
- Solid understanding of front-end and back-end technologies, including JavaScript, ReactJS or AngularJS, or Python, HTML, CSS, and related frameworks.
- Knowledge of Java & SQL will be beneficial.
- Deep expertise in AWS services and architecture, including EC2, S3, Lambda, API Gateway, and DynamoDB, among others. Knowledge and experience of serverless computing and AWS Lambda functions.
- Proficiency in building RESTful APIs and working with databases (SQL and NoSQL). Knowledge and experience of APIs and experience/micro service architecture.
- Experience with containerization technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).
- Familiarity and experience with DevOps practices and tools, such as CI/CD pipelines, configuration management (e.g., Jenkins, GitLab, Ansible), and infrastructure as code (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation).
- Understanding of Agile/Scrum methodologies and experience working in Agile development teams.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to provide technical insights and recommendations to stakeholders, ensuring alignment between business goals and technical solutions.
What's in it for you?
- We're serious about your future and our enhanced pension scheme is now in place. We ask you to contribute 3% of your salary to your pension and we'll put in 9%. If you decide to contribute more, we'll match it up to a combined total of 20% of your salary (that's 7% from you and 13% from us).
- A discretionary bonus, depending on personal and company performance.
- 36 days leave per year (including bank holidays, pro-rated for part-time).
