Job Overview

37 hours per week, Monday–Friday (shift rotation: 6:30–14:30 / 9:00–17:00 / 12:00–20:00)

This role supports the day-to-day running, safety, and maintenance of the school site. You will help ensure that buildings and grounds are clean, secure, safe, and operational. The role includes routine repairs, grounds maintenance, security responsibilities, and responding to daily site needs across all trust schools. You will contribute to creating a welcoming, well-maintained environment for students, staff, and visitors.

Duties

Carry out routine repairs, maintenance and handyperson tasks across the site.

Open and close school buildings as a keyholder, ensuring alarms are set and security procedures followed.

Respond to emergency callouts on a rotational basis, including weekends and bank holidays.

Check the site daily and make it safe for students and staff, including clearing hazards, gritting in icy weather, and removing waste.

Support cleaning staff with moving furniture and preparing areas for deep cleaning or events.

Liaise with contractors and record completed work as directed by the Estates Manager.

Sweep hard court areas, ensure drains and grates are clear, and maintain outdoor spaces.

Carry out grounds maintenance tasks such as grass cutting, strimming, hedge trimming, weeding, and seasonal debris removal.

Prepare rooms for meetings, exams, parents' evenings, concerts, and special events, then return areas to their normal layout.

Check toilets during the day, replenish supplies, and report any faults.

Remove graffiti, clear litter, and respond quickly to spillages to maintain safety.

Assist with routine water, heating and emergency equipment checks including fire alarms and evacuation procedures.

Conduct daily safety checks on the school minibus and support the home/school transport provision if required.

Monitor site security and address any concerns immediately.

Provide support and guidance to visitors, staff, parents, and students as needed.

Skills

Ability to carry out practical maintenance and repair tasks confidently.

Reliable, flexible, and able to prioritise tasks in a busy school environment.

Physical strength and stamina to cover the demands of the role, including lifting and working outdoors.

Ability to follow instructions and work independently using initiative.

Strong awareness of health and safety and willingness to use PPE and undertake training.

Good communication skills and confidence when interacting with staff, contractors, students, and visitors.

Ability to keep records and follow school procedures accurately.

A positive attitude, willingness to help, and ability to remain calm under pressure.

Full UK driving licence.

This role plays an important part in maintaining a safe, efficient, and welcoming school environment, ensuring pupils and staff can thrive in a well-cared-for setting.
