Leukaemia Clinical Nurse Specialist

We seek 1 expert haematology nurses with strong clinical, communication and leadership abilities to join the Leukaemia CNS team on a fixed term basis to cover maternity leaves (Proposed start date of the post is 26th of January You will be caring for adult patients with acute and chronic leukaemia, bone marrow failure disorders and myeloproliferative neoplasms.
The Leukaemia CNS sits within the leukaemia CNS sub-team and the post-holder will be expected to work across the wider haematology CNS team. The leukaemia CNS delivers a safety critical key worker service. This is a specialist centre for teenage and young adult cancers and the team cares for patients aged 20+.
Offering crucial support to the team are Macmillan Cancer Support Workers, PAs, data managers and MDT co-ordinators. There is a dedicated haematology telephone line for patients to call for all queries, which is run by a team of administrators and protects the CNS from excessive administrative work.
The haematology CNS team is part of the cancer nursing service and we are fortunate to be able to support university based and in house educational pathways. You will be supported to access clinical supervision.
The leukaemia CNS is an advanced practitioner who is the key worker for patients on complex treatment pathways. You will counsel patients with a new diagnosis or at disease progression, ensuring access to services, explaining treatment options, assessing suitability for therapies and information needs. You will oversee the pathway from diagnosis through to treatment end, co-ordinating work-up, treatments and monitoring response. You are the first point of contact for unwell outpatients and patients needing support, intervening to prevent deterioration and co-ordinating hospital admissions.
We have a large population of patients receiving shared care. You will provide advice and direction to other health care staff and work closely with shared and primary care providers.
The CNS delivers level 2 psychological skills necessary to respond to the many forms and kinds of psychological distress experienced by people with cancer. You will lead on the assessment of holistic needs and written information provision..
You will maintain up to date knowledge of clinical trials programmes and work collaboratively with research nurses and CTPs to support patients on research studies. The CNS is a specialist educational resource and helps facilitate the professional development of nurses within the division, as well as presenting work at national and international meetings.

You be involved in developing new services including PIFU, running patient support groups, evaluating the service and organising educational meetings.
The post-holder works under the line management of the lead clinical nurse specialist and will be expected to cross cover CNS staff both within the leukaemia sub-specialty and other haematology specialties.
