We are looking for a Technical Specialist – Design for Additive Manufacturing to join our Engineering Design Group in Coventry.

This role is an exciting opportunity to own, shape and grown the MTC's Design for Additive Manufacturing offering and support the industrial adoption of Additive Manufacturing in the UK. It combines technical expertise with collaboration and innovation. You'll help shape and deliver our technology strategy, provide technical guidance, and contribute to projects that make a real impact for our clients and partners.

Technical Leadership

  • Provide technical leadership on projects and work packages (typically up to £1m), ensuring quality and timely delivery.
  • Act as a role model by sharing knowledge, mentoring colleagues, and supporting their development—while continuing to grow yourself.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement in how we deliver projects, including processes, tools, and ways of working.

Technology Development

  • Work with colleagues across the MTC to build capability in Design for Additive Manufacturing, including developing a roadmap for future growth.
  • Stay informed about emerging technologies and identify opportunities to bring new ideas into our work.

Industry and Academic Engagement

  • Support the development of proposals and Collaborative R&D bids that strengthen our Design for Additive Manufacturing offering.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, members, and other stakeholders to understand their needs and deliver value.

  • Strong understanding of Design for Additive Manufacturing, with experience in advanced design tools (such as topology optimisation, generative design, and field-driven engineering).

  • Familiarity with additive manufacturing processes – particularly Laser Powder Bed Fusion – and experience with related pre-and-post-processing techniques, including CNC machining and surface finishing.
  • Experience leading technical aspects of large-scale programmes (around £1m), including concept generation, detailed design, manufacturing, and validation.
  • Ability to shape technology roadmaps and guide capability development projects.
  • Understanding of traditional manufacturing processes (e.g., subtractive methods, casting) and how they complement additive approaches.
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to work across technical, project management, and business development teams.
  • A commitment to supporting and mentoring others to build confidence and capability.
  • Experience working in environments where following processes and policies is essential to maintaining confidentiality.

  • A collaborative and inclusive culture where your ideas are valued.

  • Opportunities for professional development and career progression.
  • The chance to work on exciting projects that shape the future of manufacturing.

Once you submit your application, this will be passed on to our Talent Acquisition team for review. If you are successfully shortlisted, our two-stage interview process is designed to explore your skills and experience while giving you the opportunity to learn more about the MTC and decide if we're the right fit for you.

All employment offers will be subject to us obtaining satisfactory employment references. As part of your role, you will be required to undergo an appropriate level of clearance.

The Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) was established in 2010 as an independent Research & Technology Organisation (RTO) with the objective of bridging the gap between academia and industry – often referred to as 'the valley of death'.

It represents one of the largest public sector investments in UK manufacturing and, after four years of planning and a 16 month build, the facility opened at Ansty Park in Coventry at the end of 2011.

In December 2011, there were 16 industrial members, 44 staff and just a few key pieces of equipment in the 'workshop'.

Over the following seven years the MTC's rapid growth has seen the expansion of our campus with the construction of three more facilities, including the opening of the Advanced Manufacturing Training Centre and the National Centre for Additive Manufacturing.

Our role has also increased to cover not only R&D but also Training, Advanced Manufacturing Management and Factory Design.

We now have over 700 talented employees working with us.

During this time we have helped hundreds of companies across a range of industries and over 100 of them have become members of the MTC.
